What makes ugly leaves turn into something beautiful?

I was awe struck

I was a teenager when I saw my first vista of fall colors. We hadn't had a family vacation in several years so Dad wanted to go to the mountains and see the tree leaves. To me that meant nothing, I mean we have tree leaves in our own yard. But it wasn't till I laid my eyes on the mountains that I knew this was something that was very special.

We rented a cabin in the mountains near Hendersonville, North Carolina. We stayed a whole week at a place that was nestled in the foothills. I guess I reacted like a lot of people who come to Florida's beaches. Instead of collecting every shell I could find I collected every color leaf I could get my hands on. I made a scrap book of them when I returned back to Florida.

After retiring I lived near the Smokey Mountain Park. I feasted on the fall colors for several years. I have seen some very awesome colors in my lifetime. But don't think I will ever forget my first reactions to seeing the fall trees for the first time.

Did You Know?

Oak tree leaves will turn red, brown or even a russet color.

How is it done?

A tree requires certain elements to live. They need water, a breathable gas and sunlight. The gas is called carbon dioxide which humans emit in our breathing process. They take in water through their root systems. The sunlight is the energy source. It takes carbon dioxide and water and produces oxygen and glucose. This process is called photosynthesis.

As the days get shorter so does the sunlight allotment. This is the first sign to the trees that winter is coming. Winter doesn't produce enough sunlight for the photosynthesis to continue. The photosynthesis process is almost shut down. The trees will rest for the winter and live off the food stored in them during the summer months.

The green colors of the leaves (chlorophyll) soon disappears and bright colors replaces the green. These colors just don't pop out of nowhere. They are ever present in the leaves we just don't see them because of the presence of chlorophyll.

What are pigments and why are they necessary?

The simplest meaning of pigments is a coloring matter or substance. Leaves in their makeup have three main pigments: chlorophyll (green); carotenoid (yellow, orange, and brown); anthocyanins (red). These pigments determine what the color of the leaves will be as the tree shuts down for the winter. These pigments are ever present in the leaves in varying degrees. When the green color stop production then the other pigments will take over and give us a sea of beautiful colors. It's from these color that we can differentiate one tree from another.

You have me imagining that I'm standing in my Mom's yard and the birches are in peak color, the whole yard is in beautiful shades of yellow so it looks like sunshine even on a cloudy day and at dusk the trees seem to glow. I've always lived in the northland so have always seen fall color and love it!

I love fall. The leaves are starting to change here - peak will be in a couple of weeks. This is such a beautiful lens with good information, but the SquidAngel blessing is for your personal story about the first time you saw autumn leaves. Made me smile!

The colors of Autumn Leaves are stunning! We are surrounded by evergreen trees but there are many trees that do change colors and shed leaves. The maple trees are my favorite! :)
