Massage Therapy For A Better Life

What Is Massage Therapy
The practice of massage involves manipulating the superficial and deep layers of muscles and their connective tissues. Stationary, unstructured, or structured pressure or movement is used to act on and manipulate the body. Movement may involve vibration, motion, or tension. Tendons, muscles, ligaments, joints, skin, connective tissue, gastrointestinal system organs, or lymphatic vessels may be the targeted areas. Massage is used as a therapy because it is viewed as clinically effective.
Goals of massage include assistance with healing, promotion of well-being and relaxation, and enhancement of functioning. More than 80 different modalities of massage are recognized and a reputable Avalon massage therapist knows several of these. Massage may be applied with the fingers, hands, elbows, forearms, feet, and knees. Clients sit in a massage chair or lie on a massage table or mat while receiving treatment. Depending on the type of massage being provided, the client may be partly or fully unclothed, with parts of the body covered by sheets or towels.

History of Massage
Massage was written about by several ancient civilizations including Mesopotamia, Greece, Rome, Egypt, Japan, India, and China. In the Book of Esther within the Bible, there is a possible reference documenting daily beauty "treatments" involving oil of myrrh, used by the wives of Xerxes. Hippocrates wrote of massage in 460 BC, referring to it as "rubbing." In Romania, massage was traditionally used to treat several illnesses. The method involved being trodden by a tame bear, not being treated by a professional massage therapist.
The practice has come far since these days, with Chinese massage being a synthesis of traditional practices and western ideas. In China, massage is considered an important component of primary health care and is taught in medical and hospital schooling. By the mid 19th century, massage was increasing in popularity in the U.S. Until the 1970s, nurses used massage to help patients sleep and to ease their pain.

Modern Day Techniques
Massage is now also used to treat athletes and is sometimes requested by organizations and businesses for the relief of work-induced stress. Specialized chairs and tables are commonly used, with equipment like a Vichy shower and dry-water massage bed required less frequently. Different types of oil are incorporated to achieve different purposes and salts may be added to remove dry skin. When muscle relaxation is required, heat rocks are utilized.
Avalon massage practitioners work in various recreational and medical environments. Some travel to businesses or private residences to provide therapy. Acupressure, deep tissue, reflexology, Shiatsu, Swedish, and traditional Chinese massage are several of the most popular methods used by massage therapists. Each involves a different style and force of manipulation designed to achieve a different purpose. Clients should discuss their reasons for needing a massage so the practitioner can determine the most effective treatment.
Benefits of Massage Therapy
Medical research illustrates that the benefits from massage are many. A good Avalon massage therapist can provide relief from pain, temporary reduction of blood pressure and heart rate, and even reduction of anxiety, in just a single session. Over multiple sessions, longer-term pain reduction and reduced risk for disease may occur. Clients with subclinical depression may notice a reduction in their systems due to massage treatments.
Theories behind what the practice of massage may do include activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, which could stimulate serotonin and endorphin release. Scar tissue and excess connective tissue may be prevented, which increases the lymph flow. In addition, sleep may be improved, allowing clients to experience fewer basic aches and pains. Clinical studies are ongoing that investigate these and other ways massage may affect the body. The benefits a client receives from a massage depend on the type and severity of symptoms, massage method used, and quality of the massage therapist.
