The leaves of the horse chestnut tree have been used for centuries as a remedy for coughs, fevers, pain relief and reduction of inflammation. Other uses include the treatment of venous circulation - a condition which includes varicose veins and hemorrhoids. It is used to reduce the inflammation of traumatised soft tissues surrounding the anal canal.

Argenine is a protein building block which causes the body to produce nitric oxide within the cells, relieving spasms of the muscles. Where hemorrhoids are thought to be caused by spasming of the anal sphincter, argentine is said to relieve the complaint.

Oat straw soothes the digestive tract, producing stools which are bulky and which pass through the bowel quickly. The reduced exposure of the intestinal wall to possible irritants and carcinogens is said to reduce the risk of cancer.

Cascara Sagrada is a laxative - the active ingredient, one of the anthraquinone derivatives, promotes peristalsis - the wave-like contractual movement of the intestines. This in turn helps the flow of the food through the digestive system and eases constipation.
