About My Little Aveo

I just bought this little used car in February 2008 after owning a Geo Metro for about 12 years. I have to say that I hated this car when I bought it. It had so many problems during the first two months that I've owned it. But, now that many of those problems are getting fixed, I am starting to like it a little. Though, if I had the money, I think I would still trade it in.

I bought this car as a "certified" car from a local GM dealership. Some things were already fixed or replaced like brake pads and the rear seatbelts as well as some minor maintenance items.

This lens is about my love-hate relationship with my little white 2004 Aveo.

Features on My Aveo

This is not a bragging list, but an informational list. Some of these items are said to be standard on an LS, but I know some LS owners don't have all the same things I have.
  • Power Brakes
  • Power Steering
  • Power Windows
  • Air Conditioning
  • CD and MP3 Player
  • Seats with Lumbar Support
  • Power Mirrors
  • Alarm and other security features
  • Automatic Transmission
  • Spare outlet for electrical items
  • Tinted Windows
  • Alloy Wheels

Things that I've fixed on this Car

I bought this car with about 58,600 miles on it. It was a former rental car and was owned by one private owner for about 2 1/2 years. I knew of a few of the problems with the car when I test drove it, mainly a rough idle and the need for the timing belt to be changed. There were a few other, minor problems, too.

Here's what I have fixed so far:

In 2008 I repaired

*The drive belt was loose and was tightened when the timing belt was changed.

*Brake-Shift Interlock failed the first week I owned it.

*Thermostat housing cracked and broke about the third week I've owned it.

*Changed spark plugs and wires and did a fuel injection service. This made the rough idle nearly completely go away.

In 2009

I didn't have any problems for about a year until my Oxygen Sensor went out in late January 2009. They're supposed to last at least 80K miles, but mine went out at 64K. Luckily, I had a warranty and got a discount on the repair. The part, alone, was $170.

In March of 2009, I replaced the battery. I think it did pretty good as it was still the original battery.

I've been taking my car out on trips!

This car seems to do better on long trips. I was worried about things like the key getting hot or the car not starting, but it hasn't really happened. I drove for hours on end and the car actually ran better than when I take it on short trips. I think driving it fast for a long time helped clean out the injectors because it ran good for a few days afterward.

Things I might need fixed on my Aveo:

These are things that I think might need fixed on my car as of April 2009:

*Steering wheel seems to be off center, but alignment seems adequate otherwise. May have alignment checked when tires are rotated. (I also found out that the tires on one side have slightly more air the the other side. I may fill the other side more and see what happens)

*Slight backfire when starting once in a very long while. Also, very rarely, though, car acts like it's flooded when trying to start it. But, I changed the oxygen sensor and the backfire went away, but it does act flooded from time to time.

*I changed the battery and I am hoping that the "skipping thing" is gone for good. I may need new cables.

Wish List for the Car

Being a former rental car, there are some dents and dings on the car, though it overall doesn't look too bad. I would like to have some body work done as well as fixing that gray gas cap cover.

I also need a spare key. I only got one key when I bought it. It costs $140 through the dealer and I don't know if that included re-coding it. I can probably find another key for at least half the price, but I don't know if I can code it myself.

Quirky things I've noticed about this car

Here are some quirky things that are just inherent to this type of car. I may add more to this list later one.

*The transmission likes to "hunt" between first and second gear when I drive around 40 MPH. I think it's the overdrive.

*The key sometimes gets very hot. Most of the time this is directly related to how long the car has been in the sun. But, there have been times when the car has done this at night. However, it doesn't get very hot when I run the AC all day, so in hot weather, it's not always a problem. It hasn't stopped me from doing any long distance driving.

*My Aveo's speedometer is about 3-5% off and there is a TSB about it. But, it's not worth taking the car in just for that. I will wait until I need something else fixed in that area before I fix it.
