The VLC player is one of the most underrated free open source applications to date. The name itself does not aptly reflect the capability of this application. It's a media player indeed and a rather robust one. It can be run on any platform from Windows, MacOS, Unix, Linux, FreeBSD you name it. It also supports many media file types that altogether can't be supported by many media players. It doesn't stop there. Broken AVI files are also supported and can even be repaired by this app. It sounds like a miracle working app but it doesn't stop there either.

You can stream videos online from your server with it. You can capture video and convert files to other formats. It's indeed very powerful all for just a download and installation for no cost to you at all.

VideoLAN

VideoLAN organization was formed to support the VideoLAN project. It was started by students in 1996 and is still ongoing to update the app with more powerful features. The VLC media player team is recruiting new volunteers to add to their growing community of builders, developers and designers - this brought forth one of the most promising free application today.
