Virtual Assistants - one for all and all for one!
The first thing you'll need in order to succeed is belief in yourself. I think it also helps to have supportive people around you. If you don't have this at home then seek out a virtual assistant forum. Definitely do this even if you do have a great support network at home. What you learn from other virtual assistants will be invaluable in the early stages of setting up your business.
Early on I came across a very helpful bunch at the Yahoo! Group - VAIG - Virtual Assistants International Group. From there I found other similar groups and resources to help me start my business. I'm happy with this group because they are on my time zone. They are also extremely friendly and helpful, especially to new virtual assistants who are so inquisitive. The group is open to any virtual assistants or aspiring virtual assistants from anywhere in the world but you may find one in your time zone where you feel immediately at home.
One of the most popular virtual assistant networks in Australia is A Clayton's Secretary. They have all of the resources you'll need to set up and get started. Because I'm a member here I'm able to access the job leads board which is a source of new jobs and clients. The great thing about this is that if one virtual assistant has too much work she can outsource it to another virtual assistant. I have picked up a lot of work this way and it was the perfect stepping stone to my own clients.
The virtual assistant industry is definitely one where you will receive help from your so called "competitors". Other virtual assistants are happy to share their experiences, be they good or bad, for you to learn from. Also, they'll become your "work colleagues" in a way, as you share the ups and downs of your work day with them.
If you're still in two minds about whether the life of a virtual assistant is right for you, then I encourage you to do your research and ask other virtual assistants their stories.
Good luck!
