Awareness - What is it? Aren't we already aware? How can we become more aware?

While at a workshop led by neuroscientist, Dr. Dan Siegel, he used the term "awareness is everything."

To me, this meant that awareness, or the process of being aware, is foundational for a life of meaning. This particular word struck me because my favorite quote is "The meaning of life is to see."

On this page, we will explore this one aspect of reality, being aware. You may be asking yourself why this is a big deal. We are all aware, aren't we? Can becoming more aware improve our lives? What does being more aware mean?

First, take a look at the very cool awareness test in the video below.

We See Only What We're Looking For

So, expanding awareness involves seeing more than just what we are looking for. There is more than meets the eye. Not only do we miss a lot visually, but we bring our own filters and past experiences to play in how we interpret what we see.

There is an openness required to seeing in new and surprising ways.

Often, the word awareness is used in terms of becoming more knowledgeable about something, for example, breast cancer awareness, AIDS awareness, autism awareness, etc. If we don't have a direct relationship or experience with someone experiencing these disorders or illnesses, we don't know how we can help. So, awareness is also about increasing knowledge.

A. H. Almaas

To become aware,
to become conscious,
means to grow up.
It means seeing things
as they are.

Self-Awareness

Meditation is one way to increase self-awareness.

Buddha

Do you see yourself as dependent on others? If so, you have not fully grown up, according to A.H. Almaas. In his book, Diamond Heart, Book One, he says,

"You see yourself as dependent on others for love, approval, recognition, support, nourishment, contact, pleasure. There is a difference between emotional dependency and love. You have the capacity to love, support, protect, and nourish yourself. And once you realize this, you are able to love."

I believe that being self-aware is the first step and key to becoming more aware in general. By standing back and observing ourselves without judgment, we begin to understand the truth about ourselves, why we do the things we do, and what our primary motivations are.

The best way I have found to begin to do this is through meditation. It teaches us how to take that watchful stance and through regular practice, we are then able to do the same as we go about our day. By better understanding ourselves, we are then able to better understand others.

The best book to read, in my opinion, if you want to explore this topic of awareness, is the one by Anthony de Mello below.

Awareness by Anthony de Mello

The Perils and Opportunities of Reality

Anthony de Mello was a Jesuit priest who lived and worked in India. Highly influenced by the Hindu religion, this book presents a mixture of Christian spirituality, Buddhist parables, Hindu meditation exercises, and psychology to help us become more aware. He has a gift for writing in a way that anyone can understand and he is hilarious too.

Mindful Awareness and Your Brain

by Dr. Dan Siegel

Dr. Dan Siegel shares, in this Kripalu interview, methods for increasing awareness and how they affect the brain.

"Mindful awareness can be enhanced through traditional practices of mindfulness meditation, yoga, tai chi, qigong, and centering prayer.

These practices create a state in which the individual experiences a widening of awareness that encompasses a sense of attention to one's own intention, an immersion in the rich sensations of the body and the breath, and an awareness of the mind itself - an awareness of awareness.

This self-observation comes with the capacity to experience the mind's activities with objectivity, i.e. a thought or feeling becomes sensed as just that, a thought or feeling, rather than the totality of the person's identity in the moment.

The three foundational elements of mindfulness - objectivity, openness, and observation - create a tripod that stabilizes the mind's attentional lens."

Through mindful awareness, you actually rewire your brain. Read the entire article, Science of the Mindful Brain, by Dr. Dan Siegel.

Awareness and Delusion are Opposites

Delusion means mortality.
Awareness means Buddhahood.
~ Bodhidharma

Rumi, the Awareness Guru

Rumi, the Sufi poet, wrote about awareness way back in the 13th century. Here is one of my favorites called "The Guest House." A book of poetry by Rumi follows.

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they're a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

The Everything Series

After hearing the term "awareness is everything," I decided to brainstorm other words that might be considered foundational and, before you know it, I had a long list! The next step was to come up with images which reflected the chosen word and, voila, the The Everything Series was born.
