Away in a Manger

Traditionally, "Away in a manger" is the first carol that children are taught. The lyrics are simple and for such a simple piece, there is a lot of confusion over the who wrote it. There are also two tunes. Which one are you familiar with? Both of them are beautiful.

There are two other versions here. The Navajo "Away in a Manger" is very simple and beautiful. There is also the slightly irreverent version by the Scottish Falsetto Puppets that makes a point that the words are old and not everyone understands them. As a purist, I don't like my tunes or the words messed with but this is funny and can be a learning experience.

Traditional American version of "Away in a Manger"

Who wrote it? What is the right tune?

The words and music for verses 1 and 2 were found in a 1885 book called "Little Children's Book for Schools and Families", by J.C. File of the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Evangelical Lutheran Church in North America.

Some have given credit to Martin Luther for this piece of music although that is incorrect. In another book called "Dainty Songs for Little Lads", published in 1997, the song, like the picture below was titled "Luther's Cradle Hymn".

Verse 3 is by John T. McFarland (1851-1913) although that is also debated. Whoever wrote the words, Away in a Manger is a beautiful lullaby.

Away in a manger,
No crib for His bed
The little Lord Jesus
Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky
Looked down where He lay
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay

The cattle are lowing
The poor Baby wakes
But little Lord Jesus
No crying He makes

I love Thee, Lord Jesus
Look down from the sky
And stay by my side,
'Til morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus,
I ask Thee to stay
Close by me forever
And love me I pray

Bless all the dear children
In Thy tender care
And take us to heaven
To live with Thee there

Nativity Scenes for Children

Children love the story of Baby Jesus in the stable but parents may not appreciate them moving the Nativity Scene figures. Give them their own set to play with and arrange as they choose. Ask them to tell you the story. You will learn more form them than you expect.

Away in a Manger by the Scottish Falsetto Puppets

Do your kids know what the words mean?

On my Silent Night lens, I have an article about teaching children how to understand the lyrics of the carols. The language is not contemporary and children will sing the words without any understanding of the meaning. This video is slightly irreverent but very funny and lends itself to my point that we need to make sure the children understand what they are singing.
