Uber Cool Hand Crafted and Decorated Pens
My obsession revolves around pens. In fact, my first profitable sideline ever was making feather pens. You simply take a generic ballpoint pen (bic, papermate, doesn't matter), glue feathers to the end (not the end with the ink coming out!), and then wrap ribbon down the length of the pen (again, with glue). I charged $5 a piece at a cost to me of about $0.50 per pen plus labor, and nearly sold out every batch. The few unsold? Were the ones ravaged by customers' children and no longer attractive.
While many companies sell interesting pens- such as pens with scented ink, or covered in glass beads, they're still mass market items. I mean, really, where's the fun in having things that everyone else has? And I'm not even going to get into the whole import thing.
Fact is, I love small, micro, and indie biz as much as I love words and crafting. So why not marry the two, er, three.
These pens are all hand crafted or decorated by indie artisans. They do beautiful work, and I lust after their products (hint, my birthday is November 22). But I'm sharing them with you because, well, I can't afford to buy every pen I want, and I certainly don't have enough time to use them all if I could!
So have at 'em, enjoy. And when you're done buying up all their stock, come back here for links to my tutorials on decorating pens.
Happy writing!
Gorgeous Hand Crafted Wood Pen Trio
Handcrafted Pens Elegant Enough For Any Hero (Or Even A Maniacal Ruler)
I first discovered this trio of pens (sorry folks- the Celtic knot pen has been sold) on Etsy. I was surprised that there were so few pens listed in the shop when these are so clearly top quality, but I found through my conversations with the shop owner that her husband, the crafter of these pens, actually runs a separate shop for these lovely hand crafted wood pens.
I have a deep and abiding love for contrasting wood- woods like cocobolo, burl, and spalted anything, and MikConCreations has tons of them! They make their own resin too, which means that even the resin pens are truly one of a kind.
They even have a line of pens that they call "Panache"- pens that can literally stand on their own. Personally, I think that's genius, and they do say on the site that they'll be bringing out some spalted woods in the Panache pen line soon. (Reminder, my birthday is November 22.)

MikConCreations creations doesn't end there, they also have two ended pens that write from both sides (currently sold out, but keep checking- they're cool!), and a lovely pen that's made with Buckeye Burl and crushed turquoise. I've also seen pens made out of- believe it or not- corncob and denim (not together), not to mention the pens made out of Corian. Yes, Corian. They also have some snazzy perfume applicators (or cologne!).
Prices range from about $35 to about $75, but some are higher and some are lower. They're all certainly worth whatever price is on it.

Thor The Viking
Thor the Viking- Scourge of Writer's Block
The lovely and talented Marcy of StudioMarcy on Etsy has a fabulous gift for creating lampwork beads (Believe me, I know. Lampwork is loads of fun, and intensely creative, but it takes a lot of work to reach her skill level.), and some of those beads, make it onto pens.
As the bead pens are... um, beads, you can even take cute guys like Thor off the pen when you're not writing, and wear him as a necklace, and vice versa with awesome beads that Marcy sells separately.

The Thor pen runs $55 (shipping free on orders over $40), as does Jocelyn, the mermaid writer.
Marcy accepts custom orders too, if there's a pen (or pendant) that you want but can't find in her shop. But it's well worth checking out all of her beads, because there are some great beads in there! Want a pig in studded leather? Believe it or not, she has it. A Marie Antoinette bobble head? Ditto.
Need a logo or avatar? Believe it or not, Marcy can do that too, by creating a custom bead and photographing it for you. (And then you can buy the bead and wear your logo!)

Python Skin Pen
Attn: Murder Mystery & Western Writers
Have I got the pens for you!
I first saw Craftiness' bullet shell casing pens on Etsy while searching for the ideal Christmas gift for a few family members (last year I bought my father a beautiful black walnut slimline).
Both my brother and my mother are nurses, so, of course, the pens with the Caduceus clip attracted my attention, and I checked out the whole shop.
I soon was enamored of the bullet shell casing pens as well (perfect for murder mystery & western writers, as well as hunters, outdoorsmen, and military men and women). And while I'm not too keen on snakeskin at all, I have to admit that the python skin pen featured above is pretty sweet looking.

But my favorite feature of many of the pens offered on Craftiness' shop pages is the way he segments contrasting woods to make them seem to loop down the pen. As he doesn't use dyes or stains, this contrast truly shows each wood to its own advantage. Just beautiful.
The pens range from around $16 to nearly $100 depending on materials, etc, with most between $20 and $30. Shipping is free in the US.
