Mother's Day dates back to the days of ancient times. In Greece, people kept a special day reserved to honor the Mother of Greek gods Rhea. A few Centuries later the Romans had a feast called Matronalia which honored the goddess Juno. Egyptians' even had a holiday which was named Isis who was the Mother of Horus.

In Europe a Christian holiday became established and it was called Mothers Day. By the 16th century, apprentices and servants that had earned the respect of their owners were allowed to return home to visit their loved ones on the fourth Sunday of lent.

In the United States during the time of the Civil war, a youg Appalachian woman named Ann Jarvis, decided to organize women on both sides of the war, to try to improve the sanitation on Mothers work days. Ann Jarvis died in the early 1900's, but her daughter started a crusade for establishing Mother's Day as a National Holiday.


In 1908 the first mothers day was established and white carnations were passed out to all the mothers in the church that Ann Jarvis attended. President Woodrow Wilson made Mothers Day an recognized holiday in 1914. Jarvis had a short lived celebration on establishing the holiday because she became bitter when it started to become commercialized. Jarvis started a crusade to stop the holiday but was never successful at getting the Mothers Day holiday stopped.
