A Bouvette, of aboriginal descent, who is a self-taught American Metis Artist with amazing talent!

I felt compelled to create a lens on Ayla Z Bouvette as I've found her artwork to be so original and intriguing.  Ayla Z is an amazing artist whose work I first became acquainted with over 5 years ago on eBay.  At that time, I was purchasing artwork by Linda LeKinff, Itzchak Tarkay, and Anthony Falbo--whose work I had also just "discovered" on eBay.  Ayla Z's original work focuses on the subjects' eyes as windows to their soul.

Unspeakable by Ayla Z

Pictured above is Unspeakable, my first of Ayla Z's artworks that I've added to my varied and extensive collection.  It is an 11 inch x 14 inch casein painting on wood panel with grain.

Artist's Statement: If I look into these eyes for more than a minute I begin to cry ... what am I unable to say ?????  Sometimes ya gotta paint ... even though acrylics are not good for me (or the earth), I searched and found these paints whose formula is many thousands of years old, and with pigments 100's of thousands of years old ... As a person of Aboriginal descent, I like using these as I know I am not polluting.  This is strong paint, used outdoors for many centuries.

I purchased this painting on eBay in June 2002 when Ayla Z had already sold more than 3,000 items of original art since 1999.  This is an example of her earlier work as her current artwork expresses her Metis heritage.

Biographical Info on Ayla Z BOUVETTE

Artist's Statement: My Grandma was born the the OKANAGAN VALLEY in British Columbia, the Daughter of a Red River Metis father, and a First Nations mother. Her father was Frank BOUVETTE of early Kelowna history. She was taught not to even TALK about being Native. She married an Englishman and moved to Michigan. Her daughter, my mother, was taught not to go out in the sun and get "dark as a wild Indian". My mother married a descendant of New England's Colonial Immigrants, and I look like him.

But I often wonder, when I see pictures of the Okanagan, my Grandmother's homeland, how could she spend her whole life away from such beauty?? I wonder if someday I will be able to return there, with my Daughter and Granddaughters, to honor my Grandmother, and the Native Women of my family who came before her.

I am using my Grandma's last name on these because I am Matriarchal at heart, and because it represents that rich, natural part of myself I am growing to understand and value. Since moving North, and growing older, I have become more and more convinced that being Native has deeper roots than genetic heritage, and cultural bias. We are the expression of a Great Spirit, revealing itself in our hearts, and in the hearts of all living things across North America.

The pleasures for me include the beauty of color, the flow of the paint along the lines of definition, the feeling of being connected to something Greater than myself while working in the Native style and on subjects from nature. I am bringing back to my family the truth of what we are, as I continue to explore my Metis heritage and express it through my Art.

Great stuff, and great lens! I love the paintings with the birds (and the fish) - great colors. I particularly like "Man of Power Prays at Sunrise." Thanks for introducing this great artist!
