Azerbaijan: The Land of the Holy Fire

Azerbaijan, a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, was the first successful attempt to establish a secular republic in the Muslim world. A nation with a majority Turkic and Shi'ite Muslim population, it is a democratic, unitary republic Coupled with these innovations is an ancient cultural heritage

.It is one of six independent nations with majorities drawn from the Turkic language family. However, the name of the country is pre-Turkic. it is derived ultimately from as Old-Iranian phrase "Land of the Holy Fire" reflecting the Zoroastrian religion that obtained in the region in ancient times.

NB This lens does NOT deal with the Iranian province of Azerbaijan, that will be the subject of a separate lens.

The Azerbaijani language currently spoken is closely related to Turkish, Qashqai and Turkmen and served as a lingua franca throughout most parts of Transcaucasia (except the Black Sea coast) from the 16th century to the early 20th century. Russian played a similar role in the cosmopolitan areas for most of the 20th century but it has been displaced by an aggressive promotion of the national language since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Azerbaijan was the first place in the world to have an oil industry. The Zoroastrian religion practiced here since pre-biblical times* probably derived some o its inspiration to burning springs in the oil-rich landscape. And now since independence, Azerbaijan's location on the Western shore of the Caspian Sea has made it a crucial player in the development of the "new silk road" - the international oil pipeline network.

*Zoroastrianism still is actively practiced but in Azerbaijan Islam is predominant over all other religions, and there is only a small of adherents to Zoroastrianism, at one time the state religion of the Persian empire.

The Nagorno-Karabakh War

an unresolved conflict

The Nagorno-Karabakh War is dated as lasting from February 1988 to May 1994, but tensions continue today as the UN and the OSCE struggle to finally formalize a compromise based on the internal autonomy of the territory. Nagorno-Karabakh is a small enclave in southwestern Azerbaijan, with a majority of ethnic Armenians seeking independence. As the crisis progressed, Armenia and Azerbaijan became entangled in a protracted, undeclared war in the mountainous region. The demand to unify with Armenia, which became significant in the late 1980s, began peacefully enough, but as the Soviet Union disintegrated, it escalated into violent conflict between ethnic Armenians and ethnic Azerbaijanis, resulting in claims of ethnic cleansing by both sides.

Oil and Azerbaijan

Extensive development of oilfields in Central Asia and Southern Russia have led to the development of several pipelines designed to transfer the oil from the countries lie to the East or North of the Caspian Sea to the Western shore and ultimately to the markets of Western Europe. Azerbaijan, especially the Baku peninsula, and the coast north and south of the city, is where most of these pipelines reach shore and surface from the Caspian Sea. Azerbaijan is also an oil producing country and is developing extensive offshore drilling in the Western Caspian (See diagram above).

Enclaves and Exclaves

Enclaves and Exclaves

Enclave and exclave
An enclave is a territory whose geographical boundaries lie entirely within the boundaries of another territory. An exclave, on the other hand, is a territory legally attached to a larger territory with which it is not physically contiguous. The same territory can be both an enclave and an exclave. Political boundaries may not match geographical or cultural boundaries!

Nagorno-Karabakh is an enclave, Naxcivan is an exclave
