Azureus and uTorrent comparison

There are two freeware BitTorrent clients that really stand out from the crowd: uTorrent and Azureus (Vuze). Since these are the most popular ones, it's only natural that a lot of people argue about which one is a better torrent downloader: Azureus or uTorrent? Both of them have their pros and cons, some of which are listed below. Both clients, however, are fully capable of creating, downloading and seeding .torrent files, as well as doing a lot of smart and advanced thingies like automatically downloading from RSS feeds, using multiple trackers, banning specific IP addresses, or setting download priorities for each file inside the torrent separately.

Azureus overview

Vuze compared to uTorrent

Azureus is a powerful open source BitTorrent client with a huge amount of features and support for 3rd party plugins. It recently evolved into Vuze - a p2p (peer-to-peer) network of high quality video content - but you are still able to use the classic Azureus interface if you wish so.

Azureus requires Java Runtime Enviroment (JRE). This is good because it can run on any operating system that supports JRE, and it is bad because Java-based Azureus uses quite a lot of system resources. Many people say that Azureus downloads faster than uTorrent, but tests have been conflicting so far and there's no definite conclusion.

uTorrent overview

uTorrent compared to Azureus

uTorrent is a lightweight and efficient torrent downloader. It is closed source, which Azureus fans are quick to point out as a big flaw (it's possible for the uTorrent developers to add anything they want to the program, such as DRM protection, or copyright breach reporting, without the users' knowledge). There's also no plugin support, and it has less features than Azureus (but still more than you will probably ever need).

Unlike Vuze client, uTorrent is not Java-based. This is good because uTorrent is really small, fast, and uses very little CPU and RAM. This is bad because uTorrent can only run on Windows and not Linux or any other operating system (no cross-platform support is in yet). There is no doubt that uTorrent is faster than Azureus when it comes to the program itself; on the other hand, various Azureus and uTorrent speed comparison tests have shown different results, so it's not clear which torrent client can produce higher download speeds.

Azureus is better than uTorrent!

NIAZI says:

when you say vuze use larger amount of ram this does not mean vuze is not good...let u have two racing games one with minimum ram req 2 gb and one with min ram req 512...then if i ask which one is better you will say one with 2 gb of min ram...vuze gives you latest videos over the net on your screen..so you dont hav to search the internet...love vuze...love internet

best girl says:

azureus

IceWulf says:

More reporting, more features. Yes, more ram usage, but when you got 32Gb like me, who cares!

Jack says:

Vuze and Utorrent are the same, but Vuze is open source!!

B. Sun says:

Azureus makes more sense for paranoids like muah.

Dan says:

azureus is obviously better

J says:

i have to say azureus is far better.

Gunnar says:

I just LOVE Vuze! It's way better than µTorrent. All the monitoring, speedshaping and filesystem features just make it an awsome client.
µTorrent is an ok client, but nothing in comparision to Vuze

utorrentSUXXORZ says:

utorrent is the SUCK

David says:

Azureus because it's open-source, feature-rich and pretty! uTorrent is closed-source, ugly, and win-only.

mKay says:

uTorrent is missing a lot of useful features, especially in its OS X version.

Stingy says:

Azureus is slow and slows down ur comp-
but really, u can sacrifice anything for
sexiness and awesomness. Style, yo.

JustaFriend says:

Here is what i have:

I have both software running at the same time both with different content . and a second pc with the same content but on the opposite application; let me explain:

I have pc1: Vuze: downloading files 1,2,3,4,5 uTorrent: 6,7,8,9,10

On pc2: Vuze: downloading files 6,7,8,9,10 uTorrent: 1,2,3,4,5

and bot applications and pcs are running at about the same speed and downloads marks, i have seen both pcs and applications peak to 300k and as slow as 200b/s

Conclusion is they both are about equal, regardless of memory usage/if u have sufficient memory, other than that.. no difference.....

Chris says:

If you're one of the usual sad Windows users who barely understand enough about computing to turn the thing on then uTorrent is perfect. Anyone who uses a proper operating system like Linux or OS X and cares about what data might get passed around by uTorrent behind their back uses Azureus.

John says:

Azureus downloads faster than Utorrent as from my experience I think Azureus has a stronger hold on the connection of the peers compared to Utorrent. The only thing bad about Azureus is that it uses a lot of RAM but common everyone has more than enough RAM so that is not something to worry about.

starto says:

Azureus is better but use more ram and cpu but is also more safe cause it is open source...

Chadrew says:

I've used both and there's no denying that uTorrent uses less CPU and RAM than Azureus. On the other hand I have a modern PC with 2-core CPU and 4 GB RAM, so running Azureus with a big number of files downloading is no problem at all.

Also it being open source software is a huge benefit, no matter what you say :)

uTorrent is better than Azureus!

Abderrahman says:

When Azureus was just 2.5 it was the best client ever, but since the 3.0 version and the HD TV stuff entered the line, noway! Vuze is becoming very heavy and loosing its main job, P2P sharing; Files not HDs!

Fight4Kills says:

Having used both for quite a long time, I prefer uTorrent because of it's ease of use, simple interface, and it's light-weight impact on my system. I have noticed no substantial "speed" differences between the two as far as downloading goes, but as it is, that is all based on Seed/Peer ratio anyway. I can say that I do not like the new interface of Vuze because I find that all of that extra stuff takes up all of my screen space when I am only using a small portion of it.

Bettor says:

µTorrent=Small, Efficient, Fast.
µTorrent=uTP-protocol to bypass ISP throttling of uploads.
µTorrent=clean interface utilizing Windows Colours!

naniwa says:

I havent used vuze BUT one thing is for sure utorrent keeps getting said alot more than vuze and this is brought up everywere on the net^^

tommy says:

utorrent is faster, torrented windows vista black in like 3 hours

RX3115 says:

Vuze is the death of Azureus. This is all i'm gonna say. I love open source but looking at Azureus (Vuze) I think this is going to be the death of Azureus.

Hillbilly Hacker says:

UTORRENT!! Azureus hogs system resources & uses the easily hacked java platform.

pedro says:

uTorrent is really better than Azureus...
and it's not coded in java... xD

WeedTimes says:

Azureus(Vuze) Suck... uTorrent own all torrent client! uTorrent est le meillieur!

Carlos says:

utorrent, load faster and easiest to use that azzerus, and consume 80% less system resources.

Lth says:

uTorrent is awesome, Azureus is decent, Vuze is for the n00b who can't find their own torrents

compeh says:

Vuze killed Azureus. I loved it until that happened. I know many people who say the same thing. uTorrent FTW!

igar says:

yup.. i guest agree.. utorrent my choice .. simply to download

Sidu Sahib says:

utorrent because its lighter and takes less ram

flawLESS says:

utorrent!!!do view my video on how to tweak the settings n make it faster...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7G4kED49MPk

perryizgr8 says:

utorrent is much better. it does all in 250 kb what vuze needs many mbs for.

questonary says:

which won is faster?

Neasepligga says:

Azureus - fine. Vuze - NO THANK YOU. I wasn't asked about having this advert-rich 'improvement' to what was once the best client of all. It'll be utorrent for me from now on, regardless of performance (or the avoidable privacy 'issues') as long as it remains free of the Vuze kind of rubbish.

Piratebay says:

Utorrent
Small, fast, feature rich, can be set as portable, skinnable,
doesn't have annoying user interface, well-programmed, only has the features that i need. Only bad thing is it can only run on windows, but i dont use linux or mac so i don't care. it is so small, a c++ app.

Off - Tell me what is the difference between utorrent and bittorrent client? I saw 1 diff. Its the size. Nothing else. Please answer!

hairbrain says:

i vote for oranges as apples have worms that can wiggle in and eat year eardrum hair.

Sechki says:

utorrent is better than azureus for sure but BitTorrent is better than both of them.

^^ says:

uTorrent, last answer!

alex says:

Utorrent because it doesn't feel as clunky/big and doesn't slow my pc down it just works in the tray. very small and nearly has as much features as Vuze...Vuze has too many features...most people don't use them

BrookeSchue says:

uTorrent!

says:

uTorrent rocks my world! Faste, tiny, stable... Simply awesome!

jprice says:

It's small, fast, and easy to use...

Doomfury says:

uTorrent is the way to go. Sorry Vuze folk, you may have a program with all bells and whistles but by my own experience they perform equally well. I don't need anything other than a torrent client and for the average person, the features and open source parts Vuze has are wasted.

So as a result of this, why use a program that uses more system resources for no gain?

Dikamus Maximus says:

Ive extensivley used both and from that ive seen that uTorrent is the big winner when it comes to speen unless the file size goes about 3gig and under 5seeds. The smaller files 300kbs isnt uncommon but im lucky to pull 50kbps on the big files from the many ive downloaded.

Xel1981 says:

In 2007 we testing many torrent clients (uTorrent and Azureus too) and uTorrent shows the best results.
The best choice is uTorrent.

iMan says:

utorrent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Justas says:

uTorrent is much faster and smaller, and uses WAY less CPU and RAM. I used to use Azureus, and there's no way I'm going back. As for that new Vuze... All I want is a BitTorrent program to download stuff, I couldn't care less for some laggy "content network" crap.

Mantazz says:

not using any of them but i'm with utorrent.

JAV010 says:

I Don't Know Why But i Think uTorrent Is DA BEST ! :D XD

I downloaded and installed Utorrent, and being a longtime Vuze user, I could use some help understanding how utorrent compares or even works:

In Vuze, I search a keyword of what I'm looking for, and then I sift thru all the choices, choose, and then download.
But it seems like Utorrent searches for torrents but doesn't actually provide the download? I don't really get it.

Only some anonymous usage statistics, and only if you've checked the checkmark in your Preferences (otherwise it won't send anything). Now, since it's not open source, no one except the developers know *for sure* what uTorrent is reporting... But I think there's no reason to worry.

DEFINATELY uTorrent!! VUZE is good if you're not using windows because it's the fastest for non-windows machines, but if you have windows (as most people do) then uTorrent kicks VUZ's ass! either way, don't take my word for it, download them boath, and test them both on the same torrent, then you'll get an idea! they're both free and easy, so why not!??

Funny how things turn out, I remember BitTorrent being the biggest and most popular client out there. Now they kill it and start using uTorrent as the base for the official BitTorrent client. Basically all they do is re-brand it and rename it to 'BitTorrent'. So yeah, uTorrent is most popular for sure with Azureus aka Vuze possibly taking the 2nd place.
