In summer of 1945, as GIs were coming home from World War II, B.F.Skinner decied to write his classic and only fiction, "Walden Two" addressed to the GIs, a vision of a new kind of community based on the emerging new knowledge of human behavior.
Now as we enter the second decade of the 21st Knowledge Society, is it not time to return to "Walden Two" and ask is "beyond Walden Two possible now ?"

When the GIs Came Home--Summer of 1945

Summer of 1945 was beginning of new hope for the future, as World War II had ended in Europe, and the GI's were coming home. B.F. Skinner, a behaviorist faculty member at a well-known university in America, was inspired to write his classic fiction, Walden Two, addressed to the GI's coming home from war.
He went back to his own childhood at Susquehanna, PA for inspiration along with Henry David Thoreau. A friend sent him a copy of a book she wrote on 19th century spiritual communities that came into being in America mostly by immigrants escaping religious persecution. The book added the third element of motivation to write Walden Two addressed to the GIs looking for a new way of community living based on science of human behavior, but close to nature in a rural setting. Thus began the journey to Walden Two.
Walden two however never worked as a real community though some were tried. The book became a best seller in the late 60's & 70's and today is considered a "classic".
Now, at the end of first decade of 21st Century, GI are coming home again, from a long war in the middle east. will be coming home soon. Is "Beyond Walden Two" possible now ? What was missing in "Walden Two" design that made it not possible as a real community ?

if you have read Walden Two, share your comments about this fictional community ? Also, what is practical about this community ?
what was not practical ? why do you think "Walden Two" did not work ? Also, almost all 19th Century relgious communities, hundreds of them, except for one or two, none survived as a community. Amish community, mostly in PA, is an exception. Shakers in New England are now almost gone. Yet, the "relgious freedom" designed by the founding fathers have created many spiritual communities in secular rural communities of America. This observation is relavant to "Beyond Walden Two" . Comments ?

- I've read Walden Two and was deeply inspired by it. In the 70's I lived for a short time in an intentional community based on the principles from the book. It was not a spiritual community, but an egalitarian one. We had work credits and a democratic system of government. It wasn't utopia, but it filled the need for those trying to avoid the "rat race." Amazingly, the community still in exists, East Wind Community in Missouri.

- Hope we can discuss this further as GIs are coming home again from Middle East. Now we know why Walden Two did not work. Our Journey now is to Walden Three can begin. Makes sense ?
