How do you find the best and safest crib mattress?
There are so many options in a crib mattress - where do you begin? The #1 thing to keep in mind is safety. You want to make sure the crib mattress your baby will spend 10-14 hours a day on will be the safest crib mattress available. When it comes to safety, you need to know about the most important issues.
Typical Crib Mattresses have Toxic Materials that are Harmful to Your Baby
Toxic Crib Mattresses may be the Cause of Crib Death (SIDS)
Most people don't think about the toxicity of a crib mattress, but toxic materials in a crib mattress can be one of the most critical issues affecting your baby's health. Most crib mattresses contain polyurethane foam, vinyl (PVC), phthalates, and chemical fire retardants that are known to cause neurological, respiratory, reproductive or immune damage in infants. Small, developing babies should not be breathing in these chemicals and gases as they sleep!
There is even evidence that toxins off-gassing from a typical crib mattress are responsible for crib death (SIDS). So it's important to learn about this issue.

Free Report Reveals How to Reduce Toxic Exposures
The good news is that there are completely safe crib mattresses available that do not off-gas any harmful toxins. I've been studying the issue of toxicity in baby products for over ten years. I've established an excellent and qualified advisory board of pediatric doctors and environmental scientists to help me to provide reliable information. I'd like to share with you what I have learned and the safe, healthy alternatives that I have found.

No, it has not. Nor has it been disproven.
We definitely need more research. But when you look at the evidence we do have, it's very compelling and it makes complete sense. It even logically explains every factor already known about crib death. Most importantly, it's the only crib death prevention advice that has ever been 100% successful.

CPSC Crib Mattress Safety Recommendations
The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a firm flat, tight-fitting mattress for babies. Here is what they say about crib mattress safety:
"Put your baby to sleep on his/her back in a crib on a firm, flat mattress. Make sure there is no soft bedding underneath your baby."
"Use a mattress that fits tightly. If you can fit more than two fingers between the edge of the mattress and crib side, the mattress is too small. An infant can suffocate if its head or body becomes wedged between the mattress and the crib sides."

- I cannot thank you enough for posting this article. We lost our son to SIDS in January and it was only after he passed that I researched how the actual mattress could be playing a part in it. We also have children who have metabolic issues that could be exacerbated by the very things that are in the mattress and never even knew it until after our little boy awoke in God's arms. I'm such a huge advocate now for people being educated consumers and not trusting that someone else will take care of our health and safety. Please keep up the good work...I have shared it with as many people as I can.

- Maria, thanks so much for your comments. Good for you for not listening to anyone telling you you're being paranoid. You are right that a baby's crib where they spend so much time should be free of chemicals. That is really good common sense!

- Thanks Jane. I purhcased the Stokke Sleepi crib and it came with a polyurethane foam mattress. After reading your healthy child site, I ordered the Naturepedic mattress that fits the oval shaped Stokke Sleepi crib. I hope that it's a perfect fit for the crib and the fact that its free of chemicals is the best choice for my baby- especially since babies spend so many hours in the beginning in their cribs! The local store carrier was short of calling me paranoid, and that one could go crazy reading up on all these things. I informed her that an environment where a baby is spending so much of its time should be chemical free (in a nutshell). Anyway, thank you for your website, for your research, and for informing parents to be like me. Keep up the good work, and research, and keep spreading the word!
