Sure did, I found a nest once upon a post used to keep a tree propped up. Blended in so perfectly and small.

Loved this! I would go crazy with happiness if I found a hummingbird nest and got to watch as they developed. We have a lot of rufous hummers around now so I'm going to start poking around a little in the many trees surrounding our property where they hang out. I really enjoyed reading this story and looking at your photos and videos! Hope you get some more hummingbirds nesting...I wonder if they return to the same spot?

I absolutely LOVE hummingbirds, and revel each spring with their return to my feeders... I already caught sight of one this year and know that it won't be long until they play 'kamikaze' with each other fighting over the feeder - we have possessive hummers in South Carolina apparently ;) Loved the story, the pictures and I hope one day to be as lucky/blessed as you to witness such an amazing story of birth and independence. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

I have actually even told people about the baby birds pooping outside the nest to help mom out...I learned so much from this lens...whenever our hummingbird visits I think of this lens and how tiny those little eggs must have been...how lucky you were to be able to photograph and observe these tiny little ones.

I'd never seen them in their nest. How cool! Hummingbirds are so amazing. We have them here in Arizona and they get so brave sometimes that they come up and flutter right in your face until they realize your red shirt isn't a flower. Great job on this lens!
  • mulberry Oct 6, 2010 @ 11:21 pm | delete
Great photos! We have hummingbirds although I have no idea why, our house seems pretty inhospitable to them. (no shelter, no feeder, cats, not that many flowers...)
  • LizMac60 Oct 2, 2010 @ 11:26 am | delete
What a wonderful lens. Wish we had hummingbirds in Britain, but it's too cold for them.

Thank you for visiting this lens. It was an experience that would be difficult not to share with nature lovers. There are some robins and other birds nesting up in the trees, but these are too inconvenient to get to, even with a ladder. I tried this once and gave up.
  • aj2008 Jul 29, 2010 @ 12:24 pm | delete
This is such a beautiful lens. I am so glad you took these photos so we could share your lovely experience. We dont have humming birds in the UK but we do get robins and blackbirds nesting in our garden but the nests are too inaccessible to be abke to take photos.

  • bakerwoman May 17, 2010 @ 12:33 am | delete
I stood on the bench attached to the trellis to take the pictures. Most of the time, I was only a few inches from the nest. Lucky me.
  • Sam_Johnson May 12, 2010 @ 4:33 pm | delete
This has got to be one of the most awesome lens on Squidooo and rightly chosen for LOTD. The photography is extraoridarny. I haven't seen such remarkable copy outside a nature magazine. Great job and thank you for sharing :-)
  • bakerwoman May 12, 2010 @ 9:13 pm | delete
@Sam_Johnson, your compliment made my day. I do a lot of trial and error shots and then pick the best ones. Fortunately, these hummingbirds did not mind me being 6 inches
away from them while I was clicking away. On several occasions, the hummers started chirping with their beaks up in the air because they probably thought I was their mom coming with some treats.
  • dustytoes May 11, 2010 @ 9:45 am | delete
I am wondering where you live and what kind of hummingbirds these are? The lens is extraordinary...what fantastic photos you have! I just saw my first hummingbird of the season in my area of New Hampshire and will link your lens to my blog post there! Also lensrolling to a couple of my birding lenses.
  • bakerwoman May 11, 2010 @ 5:17 pm | delete
I live in Northern California by the Mission Peak Regional Preserve where wildlife sometimes visit my yard. I do not know what kind of hummingbirds were nesting in my geraniums. I do recall these had irridescent greens and browns on their feathers. Another hummingbird built a nest in a different geranium plant, laid 2 eggs and then, both the eggs and mom disappeared thereafter. I thought I had another len to write, but that would be too good to be true. Thank you for linking my lens to your blog.
  • cherylsgifts2go May 5, 2010 @ 9:06 am | delete
I so enjoyed your humming bird story along with the up front and personal pictures. They were not only great but, remarkable. I love hummingbirds. We only see the red-throated hummingbirds in our area. Had one here for awhile but, haven't seen her for a few days now. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful experience. You did a super job!

Sweet! ~ I had an experience one summer where the parents and their baby hummers must have thought I was very interesting. They were flying all around me and hovering in my face, playing and knocking each other around in the air. What fun it was, I haven't had that happen before or since. Wonderful birds, and great lens. ~ Thanks!

I also had a great chance to see little hummingbirds hatch. We had a next when we had had the children about two years, and we sighted the nest beside our front window on a jasmine vine. The nest was hanging right where we could see it well, and we always watched when the children were waiting for the school bus each morning and any other chance we had. It was exciting to see the eggs hatch and the little birds grow until they flew away. Another hummingbird chose a less than ideal location in a small apple tree in our front yard. It was a sad day when a neighboring cat came by and spotted them and before we could drive it away it was too late. Such, I guess is the law of nature.
  • bakerwoman Apr 11, 2010 @ 10:30 pm | delete
Witnessing little hummingbirds hatching and growing up day-by-day is an experience nobody can ever forget. I see a lot of ruby-throated hummers zipping around the feeders lately, so I will be on the lookout for a new nest somewhere.

Great lens! Last year, me and my kids saw a bird's nest in one of our trees in the backyard. It contained an egg, so small that we had to use a magnifying lens. We were not able to see its progress because we had become fed up with work. You are indeed very lucky. Thanks for sharing your experience. 5*

Thank you for a tear-jerking, inspiring lens. We just moved to the mainland after 14 years in Hawaii, and I can't wait to see some huimmingbirds.

One time, we opened our christmas tree and a hummingbird flew out. That was pretty amazing - it made it across the ocean in a refrigerated car for who knows how long. We called the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural resources and they came out and put a feeder in our yard but we never saw that hummingbird again.

I feel so humbled by the ovewhelming positive responses to this lens. Never did I expect it to be a LOTD. Chronicling the day-by-day development of the baby hummingbirds was the best thing I have ever done. Because telling family and friends about it was not the same as showing them a photo story. Thank you all for visiting.

Great lens and photography! A good daily progression diary and it is deserving of Lens of the Day! I love Hummingbirds and this is a cool story. I had a dove that made a nest yearly in one of my hanging ivy plants at my old house. The plant was under my eave and we had a total of 16 baby doves that were hatched there. They say once a mother bird finds a safe haven they will return every year so looking forward to updates and future Hummingbird babies for you too! 5 Stars and favorited!

Nature is wonderful, isn't it? Had two Morning Dove's set up house in a planter, don't know why, there was no room for him, he lived on the roof of the house next door. He did come and sit on the nest so she could get a break Unfortunately the babies died. I just think there was not enough room for all of them. We all felt bad for awhile after that happened. The parents put so much effort and attention into taking care of their offspring. Thanks for the lens.
