Jogger strollers allows you to take baby with you - even if you are not jogging
Why a baby jogger stroller?
More versatile than a normal pram
An increasingly common sight on city streets, park pathways and even in on forest trails is the sight of mother's taking their children into the fresh air in three wheeled baby jogger strollers. So why has there been this rise in this form of baby stroller?Mainly due to the versatility.
Jogger strollers have larger wheels - which means they can handle uneven surfaces with greater ease. This can be as simple as mounting gutters on and off sidewalks, uneven ground in parks where longer grass and bumps and dips will see standard baby strollers and prams having difficulty and even in non-urban environments.
The larger single wheels also means that when folded, baby jogger strollers fold flatter.
Perhaps one of the greatest attributes of the three-wheeled baby stroller is the swiveling front wheel. This allows unsurpassed maneuverability in tight situations, like malls, car parks or navigating really rough terrain. Of course the front wheel can be locked in the forward direction when desired.
Many baby jogger strollers also have suspensions to make babies ride more comfortable. This is ideal for times when the surface is less than smooth, especially when jogging!
Choosing a baby jogger stroller
It is important to think about your choices
1. Materials - Aluminum alloy is the best material for wheel hubs, especially if you live near salty sea air, when rust can be a problem. While durability may seem better with steel it is not. Weight is also a factor.
2. Wheels - the larger the wheels the better they are for rough terrain. The 12" wheels are ideal for smooth surfaces, but far less so for even moderate terrain, such as grassed parks. The 16" wheels will handle grassy areas and other less than perfectly smooth surfaces better while the 20" wheels will tackle just about anything.
3. Front wheels. While the swivel wheels provide excellent steering in malls and other tight places, most swivel wheels are 12" size and so are less suited to even moderate terrain if you are jogging. If you are a serious jogger, then the fixed front wheel, (aids in tracking as well) is the one for you!
4. Materials - Materials of construction can make the difference between a long term investment or a jogger stroller than will last just one child. Padded seats make for more comfortable rides and if they recline it is better for baby while they are small with less head control. Older babies appreciate the flat position for sleeping. Quality nylon canvass means durability will not be an issue.
The frame will often be made of aluminum, but look for ones with quality connectors, plastic connectors can break and be difficult to repair.
5. Folding - Ease of folding is a critical issue. If it cannot be done with one hand, don't buy it.
6. Handlebars - if you are tall like me, then you will appreciate adjustable handlebars. There is nothing worse than stooping even slightly while out and about. If you are a keen jogger, look for upmarket models with handlebar brakes as well!!
7. Durability - basically the baby jogger stroller may be ideal for babies, but what about as they get older, and diaper bags, drinks etc get added. Your baby jogger stroller should be robust.
Double baby jogger strollers
By John Pawlett
The age of your children will be a factor you'll want to carefully consider before choosing a model. Some double jogger strollers are fashioned so the children sit next to one another, while others accommodate two children, one behind the other.
If your kids are the same age, the side-by-side design might be most appropriate. This allows children the chance to interact and also distributes the weight very evenly. Many parents of twins decide to buy this type of double baby jogger stroller. They are designed to accommodate children from birth through five years of age, so you will get lots of use out of them.
A traditional tandem stroller is often a better choice if your children are a couple of years apart in age. The older child can sit in the front of the double baby jogging stroller while the back is best suited for a baby. In some double jogger strollers, the back seat can be reclined so that a small baby can be placed flat for comfort.
Many parents who use these as part of their work-out routine look for a model that can hold a few essentials including water bottles, kid's snacks and a cell phone. A double baby jogging stroller with a pouch in the back is ideal. Some even come equipped with a special holder designed for a bottle.
Long jogs will obviously require some extras including items for changing a baby or toddler. If this is a consideration for you, a double baby jogging stroller with a basket underneath that can accommodate these things works well. As the children grow you can use this space for snacks, sunscreen & picture books.
There's no reason for a parent to not get out and walk or run, even if they have small children to tend to. The fresh air will be good for everyone and you'll love getting in shape while sharing time with your kids.
