Baby Lamb's First Drink A Springtime Unit Study

It is spring. The pastures are green and lambing season is upon us. The baby lamb has just been born and the mother ewe is carefully looking after her baby.

With beautiful illustrations and simple words, Beverley Randall tells the tale of a baby lamb's first day.

Baby Lamb's First Drink becomes the focus for a springtime unit study about sheep with lamb related activities to help children learn to read, write, and count. We work with wool and learn songs and games related to sheep.

Come frolic with the lambs and learn about sheep...

Ewes and Lambs to Snuggle and Read

Plush Lamb and Ewe

Ram a Ewe and a Lamb

Ram a Ewe and a Lamb
Available in Allposters

Set out a green rug to represent the sheep pasture and fill it with plush ewes, lambs, and sheep related books. This sheep pasture reading spot will encourage your children to snuggle up and read.

Though most classes spend hours and hours teaching word detection skills, what they need most is time to read.

Some children like to read to themselves. Others like to read to a friend or a stuffed animal. Plush lambs and ewes can become snuggly reading partners for beginning readers.

Counting Sheep - Math Workjobs

DII Garden Grove Olive Placemat, Set of 6

Mathmat Pastures

A green placemat or a piece of green felt glued onto coverstock works well as a pasture.

Fences

Fences can be made from Popsicle sticks, strawberry baskets or my favorite, potholder loops. The potholder loops don't make a noise when they fall on the floor, they stay together and don't tip over.

Sheep

Over the years I have collected nearly 100 Playmobil Sheep. These sheep work well in the strawberry baskets.

My favorite sheep, however, are ones that I made from Lima Beans. The Lima Beans are spray painted black on one side and left to dry. Features can be added on the white side with black permanent marker and on the black side with whiteout. Hairspray works as a fixative.

Spring Lamb

An excellent beginning reader is enjoyable for adult and child. It is able to tell the story with limited vocabulary and ample pictures that enhance the story. The story is pleasurable enough to read over and over by both the adult and the child. The story leaves both the adult and child eager to find out more about the subject.

Notice that not all baby lamb's are white. Some are black, others are spotted brown and white. White Marinos are the ones that are generally thought of because their wool is good for making into yarn and for dyeing to make clothing.

If possible, arrange for a field trip to a sheep farm in the early spring when the lambs are being born. Notice how short the wool is on a newborn lamb. Maybe you will be to see a baby lamb's first drink.

Yes, my best friend's father raised sheep. I remember an old Disney movie that I loved about a pair of lambs, one black & one white... Maybe called So Dear to My Heart?

Yes! We often had orphan lambs (sometimes a twin or snubbed by the ewe for one reason or another) and had to feed them from a bottle until they were old enough to go on pasture. I love the way they wag their tails as they drink!
