Baby Products: A Journey from Conception to Birth and Beyond

We are expecting! Amazing. As I write this we are in our third month and as REAL newbies, we are now researching everything. Everyday we are learning the do's and the don'ts. We are discovering new baby products and finding the best products to raise a healthy baby.

What is the best decaf coffee to drink? The best vitamin to take? The best book to read? Here we will share what we learn with you.

This lens is, by defination a "WIP" (work in progress). Probably it will not be finished until our parenting days are over. Since we are now just starting this journey, we have no idea when or if that will ever be. So, be sure to bookmark this lens and come back often to see what new things we have learned on our way to parenthood.

Top Ten ESSENTIALS for a new baby

Help us to pick the things we MUST have when our baby is born.

We have to start shopping for things to have when our baby is born. We have no experience at this and would like everyone's help to determine what we absolutely MUST have when we bring the baby home for the first time.

Please add to the list below and vote for the absolute MUSTS.

Please keep to the absolute essentials for what we will need in the first days. For example we know we will need a car seat but since we do not plan to drive our baby in the first days after being born (unless it is an emergency), we do not think it should be included in this list.

Determine if and when you are fertile

Are you trying to get pregnant? If you are, you may be interested to know which dates to "try". You may be interested to know that there are online fertility calculators to help you pick the most fertile days:

* This fertility calculator worked for us. It requires that you know the date of your last 3 periods. AND it requires that the menstural cycle must be pretty regular.

If the fertility calculator above is not working for you,

* This fertility calculator only requires the date of your last period and the average length of your cycle. As it requires less information it may be less accurate. Use it the first time you try and remember to note down the date of your period. If you are not successful for a couple of months, you can always use the calculator above. That is what we did.

* You might want to take a more professional approch and buy Ovulation Predictors or Sperm Count Testing Kits. These tests will tell you when your body is ovulating or if your sperm count is an issue. We didn't even know these existed as home tests. Pretty cool that you can do this in the privacy of your own home!

Our Positive Pregnancy Tests

Pregnancy Tests

There are many types of pregancy test kits today. Most are VERY accurate, similar in accuracy to the test your doctor will use. Prices are getting lower all of the time.

They are very simple to use and all work more or less the same way, requring a small sample of urine. With a pregancy strip, you dip the strip in a cup of urine. With a cassette (such as the two shown in the photo above), you use a small dropper to transfer a sample of urine into the cassette.

In about 1 minute you will see the result. One line tells you the result is negative, two lines tell you it is positive. In our case, we got one dark line and one light line (see the photos below). So, we tried again with a different brand. But again we got one dark line and one light line. A third kit showed the same thing. Finally we realized that all the kits were telling us the same result. We are pregnant!

If you are just trying to get pregnant buy a large box and keep them handy. Like us, you will most likely be checking often.

Prenatal Vitamins

If you are intending to get pregnant, you have to think about vitamins. Sometime before you start trying to get pregancy or soon as you can, you should start taking prenatal vitamins. What is the difference you ask?

According to the Mayo Clinic, one of the leading medical centers in the USA:

Most prenatal vitamins contain more folic acid, calcium and iron than do standard adult multivitamins

* Folic acid helps prevent neural tube defects - serious abnormalities of the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid may also decrease the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight.

* Calcium promotes strong bones and teeth for both mother and baby. Calcium also helps your circulatory, muscular and nervous systems run normally.

* Iron supports the development of blood and muscle cells for both mother and baby. Iron helps prevent anemia, a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Iron may also decrease the risk of preterm delivery and low birth weight.

Your normal multivitamin certainly contains all of these vitamins, but most likely NOT enough to support a growing fetus. Make sure you are taking Prenatal Vitamins or Vitamins developed for pregnancy.

Which is the best? Everyone will have their own opinion and we will not recommend one particular brand. Take example, folic acid, often you will read something such as:

"Before pregancy 400 micrograms is recommended. Once you become pregnant the dosage should be increased to at least 600 mcg and your doctor may recommend 1000 mcg or more".

There are lots of different recommendations and probably any prenatal vitamin from a reputable company is going to be fine. But it is BEST to start taking them BEFORE you start trying to have a baby. You might as well buy in bulk if it is less expensive that way.

Baby Movement Sensor

A very important product for a baby

We will buy a baby movement sensor. As any parents, we are of course worried about everything. One thing we will worry about is SIDS. A baby movement sensor may help us with that. However, we have several concerns.

We read about them being over sensitive and not sensitive enough. Some compain of false alarms others complain that even when the baby is not in its bed, the sensor still detects it and no alarm is sounded.

In our case, we are planning on having the baby's crib in our bedroom. So we are worried that the sensor will detect us.

Lots of issues to research, but these sensors below receive very high approval ratings so they are sensors we will consider when making a purchase. If you have experience with baby movement sensors, please let us know your thoughts in the comment box at the bottom of this page.

Kiddopotamus SwaddleMe Blankets

To Keep Your Baby Cozy

Seems a bit strange to me, but we have read that baby's feel calmer when they are swaddled. It seems that baby's used to having limited movement and they will feel better when their arms are not free to move around so much. We have bought these and the miracle blanket below.

The Scoop On Swaddlers

They may work for some, ours hated them

We got both the Swaddle Me and the Miracle Blanket. Both were miserable failures. Our baby is a squirmy thing and gets out of the Swaddle me in seconds. He screams when we wrap him in the Miracle Blanket and while he does sleep longer swaddled in it, he hates it so much that it breaks our hearts to put him in it. So, after a few weeks we have put both away in the closet. We are aware that others swear by Swaddlers. But for us they have been a waste of money.

Post Partum Girdle

You may never have heard of a post partum girdle. We had not. But products similar to post partum girdles are actually standard in many cultures. The idea is to hold wear this girldle to bind the abdomen after birth and help to 'reknit' the underlying tissues.

There are no studies done about it and as mentioned many people do not even know about it. But it does make sense. If you injure your arm, or break a bone, the doctor will bind that area in order to hold the tissues in place so that they may reattach properly. Giving birth does cause an amazing injury, so why shouldn't the same principal apply.

The post-partum girdle we bought is featured below. We dont know if it works or not. But will leave comments after we give birth. Otherwise, you can search for other post-partum girdles. The reason that we bought it was:

* Positive reviews from buyers

* Comes in several sizes

* We liked the product description (see below).

* Reasonable Price

* Something that could dramatically help your figure seems like a good investment.

The Scoop on the Post Partum Girdle

We give it a thumbs up!

On the 2nd or 3rd day after delivery, my wife remembered the post partum girdle and asked her OB/GYN, when should I start wearing this? "NOW!" Replied the OB/GYN and put it on her. We marked a line where the OB/GYN placed the girdle so we would know to put it at least as tight the next day. However, everyday, we actually put it a bit tighter. One month after delivery, she has stopped wearing it.

Amazingly her figure is about 90-95% back to pre-pregnancy days. There is no saggy or baggy skin. We attribute this miracle to the post-partum girdle and would give it a big thumbs up rating.

Clarins Stretch Mark Control

This stuff is expensive! But my wife said "if it can keep me from ugly stretch marks, it will be worth it, right?" What could I say? I doubted the stuff would work, but if it were my body, I would certainly want to try it if I could. During the pregnancy, she used about 1 bottle per month for the last 5 months. Total costs about $250.

The Scoop on the Clarins Anti Stretch Mark Cream

This stuff works!!

Ok, Ok, maybe some cheaper creams would have worked as well. But we have looked very closely at my wife's tummy. No stretch marks! Not one. We are both very surprised. She is a small woman, and she became quite large during pregnancy. But she applied the anti-stretch mark cream religously 2-3 times per day and the results are fantastic! Will it work for everyone the same? Who knows? Will cheaper creams work as well? Possibly. But we both give Clarins Anti-Stretch Mark Cream a BIG thumbs up.

Baby Books

If you are first time parents like us, you will probably want to get some baby books. Not a book FOR your baby but a book about babies to help you learn to be a better parent. We thought about Dr. Spock, but decided after a bit of reading that his information is outdated.

After doing some research and seeing what was being recommended, these are the books we bought. Why did we pick them?

* They are all top selling books. If lots of people like them, there must be a reason.

* They are all highly rated books.

* We read alot of the comments and liked what the reviewers had to say about the books.

* These books were recently written. We were suprised to realize that parenting concepts change rather rapidly. You will want to buy something up-to-date.

* Attractive price: All of the books are betwee $10 - $12.

We still have a few months to read them and will let you know our thoughts after we have had a chance to read them ourselves:

Co-Sleeper

A co-Sleeper is a great baby product

A co-sleeper looks like a great idea. My wife will be able to nurse without getting out of bed. We hope that this will save us lots of sleep since we will not have to keep getting out of bed to check on our baby.

Arm's Reach is a very popular brand of co-sleeper. Where we live, we can not easily buy Arm's Reach products, so we have bought a regular crib which is:

* Approximately the same height as our bed
* Has a door which slides down to a few inches higher than the baby mattress
* We will attach the two beds together so that there is no chace of the baby falling between the beds.

Fabulous lens concept, Gene. Of course, I had no idea about most of the things you're talking about. And I can't help you with tips, either. But I'm glad to support this great page with 5*s and a hearty SquidAngel Blessing. :)

Very nice lens. I don't have any products to recommend but I do see that you have my favorite book about pregnancy "What to Expect When You're Expecting". I don't know what I would have done without it. I must have read it a thousand times.
