Spruce Up the Nursery with Baby Room Stencils

A baby room stencil can really make your nursery shine. Not only is it cheap to decorate the baby's room on your own, stenciling will also give the bedroom a special feel. It shows your little one that you love them!

There are two main types of stencils. The traditional painting ones, which are cutouts and require careful stippling of the paint, and the rub-on stencils that do all the work for you. Rub-ons allow you to get the lovely shading and details without hours of painting, but it's really up to you which you select for your baby's room.

How to Stencil Your Baby's Room

Stipple Baby Room StencilStenciling is actually fairly easy, but there are some techniques you should know about in order to get the finish you want. First of all, make sure you have all the colors you need, plus the right tools.

Step One:
Measure the room and where you want to place the stencil. Even if you use a "random" pattern, you will want to know about where to do the pattern, so measure anyway.

Step Two:
Secure the stencil with stencil tape. You don't want it moving around as you paint, so don't skip this step!

Step Three:
Load your brush with paint, then tap it on a piece of paper to make sure it's not too loaded. Starting at the outer edges of the stencil, tap the brush repeatedly, working your way toward the center. You can create a fun effect by using less paint in the center than on the edges.

Step Four:
Carefully peel the stencil up and admire your work!

If you are using a sponge brush, the technique is similar, but if you opt for a roller (useful for larger areas and stencils), roll from the outside to the inside, to ensure a clean line at the stencil's edge. Be careful not to use too much paint at once, since it can leak under the stencil edge and give you uneven edges.

Choosing a Baby Room Stencil

If you already have a theme in mind, it shouldn't be too difficult to find a themed baby room stencil. However, if you aren't sure what theme to look at, you can just browse until you see something you like.

Colors are also a consideration. You'll need to think about what colors you're going to be doing the baby's room in and ensure that you have the best ones for the theme. For example, a baby room that is ocean themed will likely be in blues and teals, but the fish that you stencil in might be brighter tropical colors.
