Baby signing

Yes babies really can sign! Babies as young as six months can be taught to sign. I know because I've done it with both my children. They pick it up suprisingly quickly and before you know it they are communicating with you in other ways than crying, imagine that! Not only that but it's fun too, especially if you do it with singing. Baby sign language is brilliant, I would recommend it to anyone! So I put this up to tell everyone more about it.

Baby signing classes

I learnt baby signing at a 'sing and sign' class. It was a lot of fun and really held the kid's attention because of the music. Obviously babies this age are way too young to be learning in a formal setting. As far as they know, they're just there to listen to songs and play with other children. The classes are small and don't go on too long. They concentrate on useful signs like 'eat', 'more' and 'all gone'. They are also packed with signs about stuff that babies are interested in like animals and transport. We learnt a lot of catchy songs, a lot of them were different words to famous tunes. Each week we were emailed the signs that would be used in the next class so we could learn them in advance. If all this sounds a little like hard work, don't worry, it's easy enough to pick up as you go along without a load of work. We both also enjoyed the social aspect of the class and made some good friends by the end of it.

Tips for signing with your baby

  • Start simple, 'more' is a great sign to start with
  • Always say the word when you sign
  • Be relaxed, there's no exam in it!
  • Accept any attempt at signing, however loose
  • Sign the same way each time
  • Observe what your baby is interested in and teach them those signs
  • Have fun!
