Help your baby sleep through the night!

Although newborns can sleep for 16 hours or more a day, it is often in stretches of one to two hours at a time. In the early, newborn days, you really can't do anything to control your baby's sleep patterns If your baby is tired, nothing will keep baby up, and if babys not tired, baby will be awake. But from the start you can give your child a "transitional object", such as a special stuffed toy or a blanket. If you keep this special toy or blanket near you for a while, then when your baby awakes during the night they will have an object that is mum scented and will help reassure them back to sleep.

Differentiate between day and night, encourage plenty of activity during the day, talk sing and play etc while your baby is awake surround your baby with
plenty of regular household noises and lots of light, so as they are stimulated through the day. Your baby will still need naps during the day but ensure
they don't nap for long periods during the day as this may leave them awake for long periods during the night.

At night time try to follow a consistent bedtime routine such as bathing, singing, reading, quiet playtime etc. This will help your baby assosiate these activities
with bedtime and sleep. When you put your baby to bed try to ensure that they are drowsy but still awake, your baby needs to learn to fall asleep by
themseleves.

If your baby wakes or needs feeding during the night, try to keep it low key, ensure the lights are dimmed, talk to your baby in soft calm voice so your baby
Knows its time to sleep not play.
