Help For When Your Baby Isn't Sleeping at Night
Tips to Get Baby Sleeping at Night
Whether you are a new parent or are more experienced, a baby who isn't sleeping at night can be a very difficult thing to deal with. Although everyone probably has a tip for you to help your baby sleep through the night, here are some tips that have been found to be most effective for weary mothers.
Newborn babies will sleep up to 16 hours a day, but they sleep in small chunks of time, sometimes just an hour or two. This is caused by hunger due to their small tummies and high metabolism. As they start to get older, you will see them naturally start to sleep for longer periods, but there are still some things you can do to start them off for healthy sleep patterns.
During the day, you should stimulate baby with noises, lights and movement. You can sing, read or talk to baby to keep him/her interested. Make sure to get baby accustomed to regular household noises such as the telephone, vacuum cleaner or traffic so that those noises don't startle them as they are trying to sleep. Getting stimulation out of the way during the day can help baby be more restful at night.
When bedtime rolls around, start to develop a routine for baby. You may want to include a bath, pajamas, a bedtime story and cuddling. What the routine consists of is not important, what is important is that baby knows the cues to start settling down for the night and eventually sleeping.
A very helpful tip is to make sure you are putting your baby to bed awake. If you are consistently letting baby fall asleep and then laying him/her down, you will not teach them how to fall asleep on their own. You will want to make sure that baby is drowsy, but not quite asleep and then lay him/her down - patting to encourage sleep if necessary.
In the middle of the night when baby stirs, don't jump up. Often times babies will move around at night and won't wake up entirely. A little pat or even a pacifier may be enough to help baby soothe himself/herself back to sleep. There are many parents who will pick up their baby at the first sign of movement and actually wake the baby up completely! Of course, if it's time for baby to eat, don't use a pacifier.
Lastly, when feeding or changing baby at night, keep the stimulation to an absolute minimum. Keep the lights low, don't talk or make a lot of noise and keep movements very subtle. This will help keep baby in a drowsy state which will make falling back to sleep a lot easier.
Before you go crazy with sleepless nights, make sure to try some of these tips. Even if you can just get an extra hour of sleep, it will make all the difference. Even if you don't have huge success, remember that you are setting baby up for healthy sleeping habits as they get older, which will benefit you for years to come.
