Getting To Know Their Teeth

The unmistakable cry of a teething baby will let you know that he or she is getting his or her first teeth.

With this exciting first also come questions. Are my baby's teeth coming in the right way? What can I expect in the future?

Here are some guidelines to get you ready to welcome in baby's baby teeth.

What is Teething?

If you really want to know...

Creative Commons image by Upsilon Andromedae.First off, what is teething? And how do experienced moms seem to be able to tell a baby is teething with just one look?

Teething is when the tooth pushes up through the baby's gum and first pokes out. It has to break through the gum, so there's some discomfort associated with the process. Hence, a teething baby is easy to spot. She may drool excessively, be more irritable than normal, have swollen gums and try to bite objects more than usual. Sounds really fun, right?

There are many remedies and baby gifts that can help soothe sore teeth. These include teething rings, wash clothes, pacifiers, and all sorts of new baby items that have come to the market recently.

3 to 6 Months Old

Infant Teeth

Photo courtesy of Andres Rueda on FlickrAround 3 to 6 months is the average age when the first tooth will begin to poke through the gums. It may be accompanied by a slight fever. Don't be alarmed - it's normal! If you're really worried, you can simply call your physician. It doesn't hurt to ask them to confirm!

A pediatrician can tell you if it's a teething fever or something else. Seek advice if this happens and then enjoy baby's first new tooth. It will most likely be a bottom tooth. Baby's sleep habits may also be jumbled up because of her teething.

Ask the pediatrician what you can give baby if she is uncomfortable during the night, sometimes all it takes is the comfort of their baby blanket.

6 to 18 Months Old

They just keep coming!

Photo Courtesy of Dan Saavedra on Creative CommonsLook for those beautiful top front teeth next. From 6 to 18 months, baby will start cutting her next teeth.

There should be a cluster of around six that come in fairly close together. These should include those darling front and two other top teeth and two bottom center teeth.

Remember that for every baby, it is a different experience. So if they are early or late, it's not to worry. If you are concerned, it's best to consult with your pediatrician for advice.

Fun Teething Facts

Okay, so they're not always fun.

Photo by TedsBlog on Flickr.Although baby's teeth will come in at varying stages, his or her full set of baby teeth will not be complete until she is four years old.

Don't be alarmed if your baby's teeth come into place with spaces between them. This is normal for baby teeth and does not necessarily mean that her permanent teeth will have spaces between them.

Between 10 and 19 Months Old

Where is the milestone?

Flickr image courtesy of Siti Saad.Look for molars next between the 10th and the 19th months of baby's life. Babies reach milestones of all types at different times from walking to potty training.

Teeth are no different. Don't be surprised or alarmed if your baby reaches 10 months and still doesn't have their front teeth. Every child is different. It could be baby's first birthday before you see anything. If you're really concerned, you can always consult a pediatrician or pediatric dentist.

16 to 23 Months Old

Toddler Teeth

Photo courtesy of Sam Pullara on Flickr.Experts give a wide range of 16 to 23 months for the next group of teeth to come in. These will include the canines.

Sixteen months to thirty-three month olds will experience a slow filling in of the rest of the full 20 baby teeth baby they will get. They'll get ten on top and ten on the bottom.

Baby Teeth

Just because they'll eventually fall out does not mean you don't have to take care of them.

Taking Care of These Teeth

Small But Important

Image courtesy of Wheeda on Flickr.Establish good oral hygiene early on. As baby gets older, let her watch you brush your teeth. Get her own baby-sized toothbrush and special baby-safe toothpaste and help her use it so she can start taking care of baby teeth.

Many parents wonder why such good care must be taken when baby teeth fall out anyway. The best care should be taken of baby's developing mouth as her teeth aid her in speaking and eating. Your child should not get his or her first permanent tooth until around age six.

Great advice, this was really helpful. We have a 5 month old that is teething, drooling, etc., but that first tooth isn't here just yet. Any day now based on the amount of drool!
