Baby Wipe Warmers
Do these wipe warmer things live up to the hype? Or are they an overrated waste of money?
Read the case for each then join the debate below...
Why Baby Wipe Warmers Are Overrated
-
They don't really make a difference. - Babies don't get upset because you're using a cold wipe. They get upset because you're messing with their PJs and diaper in the middle of the night when they want to be sleeping or eating.
The wipes come out lukewarm. By the time you get it to baby's bottom, the wipe has cooled off enough in the air to not feel much different than a wipe that wasn't warmed. The wipe leaves some moisture behind on the skin. When that moisture evaporates it cools the skin. So what was the point of using a lukewarm wipe? - They waste electricity. - It's probably a tiny amount, maybe pennies a month...but that's money that could be going into baby's college fund. And wasting electricity can contribute to global warming. Mine wastes even more electricity with its useless green light. It looks like a one eyed electricity stealing space alien in the dark of night.
- Wipe warmers require maintenance. - There's cleaning the thing to prevent mold. Re-stocking it with wipes. And you also have to re-wet the pad at the bottom of the warmer because...
- Wipe warmers can dry out your wipes. - This happens a lot. It helps if you only put half a stack of wipes in there (more time wasted re-stocking the wipes) and re-wet the pad regularly. Even doing that, the wipes at the bottom of the stack will likely be dry when you get to them.
- It's much easier to use wipes directly out of the refill pack. - There are enough tasks to do caring for an infant. Why make more work continually refilling the warmer with wipes? Baby wipe refill packs are easier to use (we like the Kirkland brand from Costco) and you can take them anywhere needed to change your baby.
- Wipe warmers can turn your wipes brown. - I haven't seen this happen with our warmer. But it must be a problem with other brands because the packaging made a big deal about preventing browning.
- Wipe warmers take up space. - Do you really want another item cluttering up the baby's changing area?
Why Baby Wipe Warmers Are Worth The Money
- Some babies prefer the warmer wipes. - Every baby's different and some may fuss less if the wipe is even a little bit warmer.
- It makes a great conversation piece. - Love it or hate it, you'll have something to talk about with other new parents.
- Use it to grow mold for science experiments. - Save it for when your baby is old enough to enter a science fair.
- Build a scary green eyed robot. - It can be the key piece to your next Halloween costume or even a snow man. A futuristic green eyed snow man would be cool, I might try that next winter.

Mia says:
It's true that the wipes get cold very quickly. I learned to keep the warmer right next to the changing area and get them only right when I'm ready to use them. My baby loves his warm wipes. He doesn't cry during a changing except when a cold wipe is used. Some kids cry regardless; my kid's not much of a crier.

sleepy5001 says:
If you leave it plugged in all day and all night, the wipes become warmer than just "lukewarm", but if you have a husband who is worried about the extra $.02 per day to run the thing then you might have trouble using it to its full potential.

This is the warmer we own. If you really must have a wipe warmer (and don't mind a green alien eye glaring at you in the dark) it seems like a good one.

- Great topic. There are so many things to buy when you have a new baby, it's good to know when something may not be worthy of your hard earned cash!
