Why is My Baby Crying?!

"Honey, it's your turn..."

We all swear we're not going to be that type of parent. The parent who just wishes that their baby would just shut up. But for new parents, it's hard to adjust to baby's demands for attention.

When baby comes along, it can be difficult to deal with. Only the lucky few have a baby that doesn't cry. But when baby is crying, he or she is just trying to communicate. This is the only way that they know how. They are trying to tell you something that they need.

Babies cry the most during their first three months, but there is a large range in the amount of crying that's considered normal. Some babies cry for an hour; others may cry for the whole day. Both are considered normal.

Does it seem like your baby is crying more during the afternoon? It is thought that when babies are born they have a special automatic screening ability that helps them to shut out all noises so that they can rest. As time goes on, this ability decreases so they are more susceptible to noise or motion. Since things are more active during the daytime, they are more likely to cry.

There are many reasons why your baby might be crying and learning to interpret these cries is one of the greatest challenges of parenthood. To get you started, here are some of the reasons that they might be crying:

Hunger. One of the most common reasons for baby to cry is hunger. This probably should be your first assumption. When baby starts crying, see if he or she would like something to eat.

Discomfort. The cry of discomfort is often due to a dirty diaper, but may also be caused by slipping into an uncomfortable position in their chair or bed and not being able to adjust themselves.

Boredom. What? Who would have thought that a baby could be bored. But it's true. Sometimes baby just needs to be held and have you pay a bit of attention to him or her.

Pain. Baby may cry if he or she is in any type of pain. Sure, this pain could be something obvious like falling down...but it also can be the type of pain that you can't see. Things like an ear ache or gas pains may make your baby cry.

Disturbance. Babies don't like to be surprised and if there are any sudden loud noises or movements, you may find your baby will start crying.

Watching your baby cry is painful for you too! But hopefully with a bit of time you'll be able to understand the different types of cries that your baby has and you'll be able to give him or her what she needs.

Choosing Your Baby Bedding

When baby comes, all necessary precautions must be taken to ensure your baby's safety. One of the things that needs your attention is the baby bedding.

Baby bedding? Is it really that big of a deal? Can't I just buy something cute and frilly and be done with it?

Yes and no.

They type of baby bedding that you chose is very important for your baby's safety. Certain types are more likely to smother your baby and prevent him or her from breathing. In the past SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) was often attributed to baby bedding that was too soft.

Follow these guidelines to choose baby bedding that is right for you:

1. It should fit the bed. Whether you choose a crib, cradle, or bassinet, the bedding that you choose should fit it properly. If it's too big, it may bunch up around baby's face and impair his or her breathing

2. It should be made from cotton. Cotton is the best material to use since it's soft, absorbent and breathes easily.

3. It should be pastel colors or white. Bright colors may stimulate your baby and prevent him or her from sleeping.

4. There should be no extras in the bed. Extras such as stuffed animals or other toys are unnecessary. They may distract your baby or worse, harm him.

5. They should prevent her from falling. You may want to use a bumper pillow around the crib so that your baby does not fall through the cracks. But you want to avoid sturdy pillows that will help your baby climb out when he's older.

Once you follow these simple suggestions, you will have no problem selecting the baby bedding that is right for you and your baby.
