I think teaching a baby how to sign is a great idea. I did a little with my child but not enough.

Fascinating topic! Would love to be able to share this with my grandson. :)

What a wonderful lens! I think an introduction to baby signing should be part of every pre-natal class.... and then they should hand out the URL for this lens! :) Thoroughly blessed by a Squid Angel. :)

Excellent lens! I learned ASL in college and taught my 3 yr old son as early as a few months old. He had a bit of a speech delay due to his epilepsy and would sign the things to me that he couldn't say. I love ASL and I thnk more parents should give it a try. I have added you to my list of favorite featured lenses for parents of children with special needs. I am trying to create a type of virtual support circle for these parents and for others who just want the information. Thank you so much for sharing!

here is a link to my lens that I am featuring you on:

Signing helped us so much! Babies and toddlers have so much frustration trying to communicate. This helps them relax and express their needs.

I really enjoyed the lens. I am looking for different ways teach my 22 month old to communicate with me. I am working on verbal but this is a great alternative. Can't wait to try it.

Years ago I worked with a nonprofit daycare that had a large number of deaf and hearing-impaired children in it, so all the kids learned a fair amount of sign language just in the course of their day's activities. It struck me at the time how much easier it made it, having a smattering of ASL, for the very young ones to communicate with adults and older children, whether hearing or not; and very interesting how quickly the parents picked up signs from their toddlers, too. :) Great lens!

Cool lens! I think this can really help in communicating with the kids. Great job!

I suppose gesturing as part of the process of speaking - whether it is to a child or an adult - is an in-built human trait. Some of these gestures are ethno-specific, region-specific, community-specific, or family-specific. Yes, with some children, using sign-language as a distinct means of communication does help in connecting with them more effectively. Very interesting topic and a well-made lens.

Another great lens from you, My daughter is 3yrs old and autistic. I'm not sure whether signing is a good thing for her considering I have to try my best to teach her to talk. Overall I thing sign language is great.
  • BunnyFabulous Dec 11, 2011 @ 6:04 am | delete
Actually, many parents have found signing to be very helpful for their autistic children in learning to communicate. Signing Time has a page of resources for families with autism: http://www.signingtime.com/index.php/shop/programs/autism/. Hope this is helpful.

My wife and I have definitely started teaching our baby sign language. I think that your page could benefit from a graphic demonstrating the simple signs to teach you baby at first. Keep it up!

I love you site! I wish I'd found this site a couple of years ago when I was just teaching my baby to sign! :) Still, this will be helpful when I get my second baby! :)

I taught other children basic signs in a toddler preschool for children who were slower in their development. It was a part of my internship. It is very rewarding and a great way to form communication with a child who cannot find the words to speak. Great lens!

    What an awesome internship!

Sign language is very interesting and I've seen it at work firsthand with my close friend's children. I've learned a few signs myself and I think it's a great way to communicate with babies/toddlers before they start speaking. Great work on this lens!
  • BunnyFabulous Feb 13, 2011 @ 12:39 pm | delete
Thanks for the encouragement! Yes, even learning a few signs can be incredibly helpful with young kids. I know it made our lives much easier.

Excellent lens. I taught sign language to my last 3 babies and am starting yet again with my new baby. Blessed by a squid angel.

prosperity66 -- You bring up a commonly asked question. Research has shown that there are no developmental speech delays in hearing children due to signing. In fact, the opposite has been indicated by several clinical studies. Hearing children who sign tend to have a 'jump start' on speaking, since research seems to point to a connection between communication functions of signing and verbal development.

In my personal experience, learning American Sign Language has been fairly similar to learning a new verbal language, but in this case we've had the benefit of some great tools to teach it to very young children, so I've learned the words more quickly and easily. I guess I learn better at a young child's level too. :) The research summary that my lens points to is http://signingtime.net/pdf/st/STResearch_Summary.pdf, which provides more detail about the benefits of signing if you are interested in reading further.

I really appreciate your feedback. Thanks!

This lens is interesting - although I woudln't have learned this language to my son, but the reason is maybe that I'm from a different culture as yours - but I've one question: when do those children start speaking? Aren't they at the risk of speaking later than others? While signing might be a great way to communicate with your child, it also becomes "easier" to not try to speak. Am I wrong?
I would like to learn more about it.
Anyway, I rated 5 stars as I really liked the lens!

I love signing with my baby. He is 16 months old and we are learning fun signs now such as "car, ball, bird "and more. We started at around 6 months with signs for "more" (when eating), "water " and "eat." I can't tell you how amazing it is the first time your child signs to you - he was so excited that he was understood and his needs were met. I was so excited that I understood what he was asking for! Plus, it creates a special bond between you...And research shows that signing doesn't delay language development - just the opposite! Signing helps to promote early speech. I can't say enough about it - its fun and educational for the entire family!

I absolutely love the Signing Time series. I think it's brilliant. You should get to know Rachel Coleman a little more, she's fascinating. Her oldest daughter Leah is deaf and the youngest daughter, Lucy has Cerebral Palsy and Spinal Bifda. What an amazing woman she is. I've been signing with my son for over two years and I can't tell you how amazed I am at his IQ. Not only does he know all the ABC's, animals, colors, etc but he uses it in everyday conversation now. It's amazing! Thank you for visiting my lens. I am going to lens roll this one to my Teach Your Children Sign Language lens. Thank you for sharing! I wish that all parents saw it this way.

My daughter used some signs as a toddler. She individualized them and made them her own. It was so very helpful to have this avenue to communicate with her. She is a highly verbal person to this day (age 10).

It was amazing to see our granddaughter express her needs through sign language. Her parents were able to know when she wanted more food or when she was done. Playtime was enhanced because we could understand when she wanted to do some particular activity some more, or when she was done. While I will never be a parent of an infant again in my life, I am convinced that signing is "the way to go". I am certain that this website will be invaluable to those who take the time to investigate its comprehensive content.

Time spent with our "signing" granddaughter was so much more satisfying because she quickly taught us how to better communicate with her. It was amazing to see how happy and stress free mealtime was for mom and daughter when they could effectively communicate with each other. Awesome website! Highly recommended for all parents of young children.
