Practical Advice For Baby Boomers Looking To Start A Home Business

The Baby Boomer generation has always made an impact on everything they touch and the Internet seems to be no exception.  While the Internet has always been highly touted by Generation X it looks as though older people too are harnessing the power of the online world in massive numbers.  So what are Baby Boomers and seniors after?  We'll besides information and shopping, boomers are also looking for home business ideas so they can start getting their share of online profits.

As an older entrepreneur who has been involved in network marketing and running home businesses for the past 15 years I've put together a few tips to help other baby boomers and seniors locate the best home business idea for them.

Baby Boomer Business Idea Tip #1

Find Something You Are Interested In

When you start searching the Internet for business ideas you are going to come across thousands of opportunities. Every Legitimate Home Business you review is going to be product or service driven. This simply means that the product or service you will offer to others via your new business will essentially be the driving force behind your profits.

For example, if you are interested in health, fitness, and nutrition, then a business fueled by these types of products might be right for you. Or if you have special information, skills, or talents people would pay for then exhibiting those as your product or service might be a way to get your new money making venture off the ground.

The main thing to understand is money can't be your only motivator when you get started. While making money is the end goal, having something your passionate about will fuel your motivation and success along the way.

Baby Boomer Business Idea Tip #2

Find A Business That%u2019s Been Proven By Others

While it is true that the biggest business tycoons in the world were renegades who forged their own path and created something no one else had, I'm assuming your goal as a baby boomer business owner isn't to become the next Bill gates. Instead you're probably interested in living comfortably and having enough time, money, and freedom to do the things you love.

For this reason the key to success is to piggyback on a business concept or opportunity that has already been proven by others (preferably by people much like you). By starting a proven business idea you are able to reduce your chances of screwing things up. You are also able to speed up the process of getting your new venture off the ground and start making money quicker.

Baby Boomer Business Idea Tip #4

Think About Network Marketing

One of the greatest business concepts that thrive off the success of many people is network marketing. Network marketing is a business idea that runs kind of like a franchise only much cheaper to get involved in and you can operate out of your house.

Just like a McDonald's franchise gets you everything you need to run a McDonald's, a good Network Marketing opportunity gives you everything you need to run a home business. Kind of like a business in a box where your product, training, marketing & advertising, continuing education, and sales materials are all included.

Another great thing about Network Marketing is you are able to leverage your efforts and turn them into long term residual profits. This is possible because you get paid for both selling a product or service plus you get paid off the efforts of others selling that same product or service.

While that might sound confusing just think of it this way, Network Marketing is a duplicable business concept were you make money every time you sell your companies product and when you invite someone else to sell that product alongside you.

Baby Boomer Business Idea Tip #4

Make Sure You Have A Knowledgeable Mentor

If you go about starting any venture without a mentor you actually decrease your chances of success by at least 50%. A qualified mentor will not only make your home business journey much easier, but you will also be able to avoid all the pitfalls and money lost that your mentor went through when they first started.

So where do you find a mentor? Well, if you start a home business via a network marketing company, than just make sure the person you join under is qualified and willing to coach you as you get going. If you are starting another type of business, this task can be a little tougher as most qualified mentors won't want to coach you because you soon would be their competition.

Baby Boomer Business Idea Tip #5

Make Sure You Analyze The Costs Of Your New Venture

No matter what idea you pursue you must understand that there are going to be some sort of costs involved with your decision. The costs usually associated with home businesses are the product or opportunity costs and the marketing or advertising costs.

I suggest running some numbers before you start any business. The first thing you need to do is come up with the monthly costs of your new venture. Make sure to include the marketing costs as those will be what will fuel your growth. If you don't know the marketing costs then you need to do a little research. Ask a mentor, potential sponsor or someone else who is having success how much they spend to market their home business.

After you figure out what it's going to cost you then you can decide if you have the funds for the business or need to find some kind of financing. You can also analyze this data to see what it is you will need to do to start turning a profit.

Final Thoughts...

There are thousands of ways for baby boomers to start their own home business. With so many options to choose from it's important that you cover all your bases and do your due diligence before you jump into something that may or may not be right for you.

Find opportunities that other boomers are having success with and run it against your home business litmus test. Do you like the product? Has it been proven by others? Can you find a mentor in the business? Do the start-up costs make sense for you? If you can answer yes to those questions than you just might be on your way to baby boomer business success!
