Classic Cars of our Baby Boomer Youth

These are the cars you had or wish you had during your Baby Boomer youth. It seems that every town had a "cruise spot." You know what I'm talking about! In my small little town we cruised the block. Today they have instituted one way streets so I don't know where the kids cruise now.

In my husband's high school days they went to Oscar's Drive-In on Clairmont Square or El Cajon Boulevard in San Diego and cruised the parking lot. That was the place to see and be seen. The days of high school, muscle cars, football games, and drive-in movies, those were fun days weren't they? Read more about Baby Boomer Cars below.

Baby Boomer Cars made for Cruising

Performance cars

Those were the days of the V-8 engine, fuel injection carburetors, cowlings, and when gas was 20 cents a gallon. Cars were distinctive and you had no trouble telling them apart. You knew when you were looking at a GTO or a Shelby Mustang. A 57 Chevy didn't look like any other car. The Cadillacs had the big fins on the back. The Pontiacs had the stars on the brake lights. Everyone knew what a Corvette Sting-Ray looked like. Today it's hard to tell a Mercedes from a Honda.

Where have all the great car designs gone?

Why can't we have stylish cars?

Wouldn't it be cool if the car companies could bring back the classic car bodies and put modern engines in them? Maybe they could make them hybrids or some other efficient type of car. Cars today are boring and a lot of them are downright ugly. Where are the great car designers of the past and why can't we have cars with style?

Do you love the classic Baby Boomer cars?

Do you remember muscle cars and cruisin?

Let me hear from you about your favorite classic Baby Boomer car.

It was very hard to vote. I liked all those cars. I was born in 1955 but always liked the 56 Chevy. We used to cruise Frisch's Big Boy when they had carhops. The late 60's and early 70's was pretty much the end of the cruisin' era. The cars now all look alike....no character. Thank you for a terrific lens.
  • junior8rules Mar 1, 2011 @ 8:30 pm | delete
Now if I had these cars today,.. like I had back in the day. 63 Chevy impala, 64 Mustang, 65 Comet Cylone, 68 396 Chevelle, (1 rare 3 speed, bench seat), the other built to the max,
Had a L-88 427 in it. ,71 Dodge Challenger440 RT, I would be in heaven! Oh well My 2010 Hemi Challenger makes me happy
  • PeteSchultz Feb 11, 2011 @ 4:24 pm | delete
Yes I do...and also modified cars from the previous generation. My dream car would be a GTO convertible, I guess any 60's model and any given motor would be fine with me, I'm too old to try and rein in a big V-8....and I can't afford the gas.

I totally remember muscle cars and cruisin. My favorite muscle car was and still is a Chevelle. Cars then weren't the carbon copies we see today, were they? Blessed by a Squid Angel today!

Really nice memories! It was actually hard to vote; I like so many of those cars! You're absolutely right about everything looking the same these days. I want to see a new classic car!

    Great lens, loved the pictures.

Those were the days! I drove in many "Powder Puff" races. My brothers and I owned a stockcar and keeping it "rad" to race was our only thought then. Fabulous lens. 5 stars, favorite, fan and lensrolled to my car lens.
  • Pastiche Oct 3, 2008 @ 7:29 am | delete
Ah, they just don't make 'em the same today. I had a '57 Chevy convertible ... with a Hurst floor shifter kit installed. Learned to drive in a field on that baby. 5*s to another fab Boomer nostalgia lens.
