My Baby Boomer Music - From the 50's Until Now
I am definitely a baby boomer, born right in the middle of the boom - 1956! Music has always been a huge part of my life and, like most people, certain songs remind me of specific times and places.
The 50's brought the birth of rock and roll - and Elvis! The Sixties belonged to the Beatles and Motown, and the Seventies - disco! I feel like I missed the Eighties completely because I was having babies - my music revolved around Raffi and Sharon, Lois, and Bram. By the 90's, I was starting to listen to my kids' music. They love the oldies too.
Throughout all of these years, I had the musical foundation laid by my Dad, who loved jazz, big bands, and Frank Sinatra. So, come take a trip down memory lane with me and my baby boomer music.
"Music puts
wings

human spirit."
My Main Musical Influence
... Frank Sinatra
There are so many great Frank albums. Here's one I grew up listening to.

The 1950's
Baby Boomer Music of the 50's
Ages 0 to 4
The fifties brought about a revolution in music, from jazz and big band sounds, including the crooners like Bing Crosby, Pat Boone, and, of course Frank Sinatra, to rock 'n roll. Sam Cooke, the Everly Brothers, and, of course Elvis Presley.
I was only four at the end of the 50's but my parents were most likely listening to jazz, specifically Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Charlie Mingus, and Dave Brubeck.
Here are some of the pop hits from the 50's. I love most of them but hadn't heard of "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and "Crying in the Chapel.
Popular Songs from the 50's

The 1960's
Baby Boomer Music of the 60's
Ages 5 to 14
I would go to bed hearing my Dad's music playing, still jazz but also Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand. Sinatra and Streisand are indelibly marked inside of me. As I grew older, Beatlemania hit and I loved Paul, as did most of the girls my age. My cousin, Patrick, who was a teenager, introduced me to the Supremes, the Righteous Brothers, and the Dave Clark Five.
The Third Album

Heart-wrenching love songs with Barbra at her purest voice.

Baby Boomer Music of the 70's

This decade covers my high school and college years. Music was essential to my life. I remember the first album I bought - The Guess Who (American Woman). and my first concert at age 16 - Alice Cooper! I listened to Elton John, The Doobie Brothers, Gino Vanelli and Liza Minnelli. Judy Garland's "Live at Carnegie Hall" - an amazing performance!

Madman Across the Water
by Elton John
For some strange reason, "Madman Across the Water" by Elton John is my favorite album of all time. I think I will still be moved by "Levon" when I am 80 years old.
Listen to a few mp3's from this great album.
The 1980's
Baby Boomer Music of the 80's
Ages 25 to 34
The 80's were like a blur to me. I was married in 1982 and had babies in 1986, 1988, and 1991. In the early 1980's I loved listening to Jane Oliver and my husband and I danced to her song "You" at our wedding. My husband introduced me to singer/songwriter Chris de Burgh, and he is still one of our favorites. During the late 80's, our home and car were filled with children's music.

Thriller - 1982
The top-selling album of all time.
Thriller on Wikipedia
With the death of Michael Jackson, we have heard more about the incredible popularity of this album. It is the only album to sell more than 100 million copies. The next two highest selling albums are AC/DC's "Back in Black" and Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" with 45 million copies each. Incredible!!
Thriller is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Michael Jackson. The album was released on November 30, 1982 by Epic Records as the follow-up to Jackson's critically and commercially successful 1979 album Off the Wall. The 1990's
Baby Boomer Music of the 90's
Ages 35 to 44
Not much from this decade really stands out to me. I remember MIchael Jackson was huge, and also Madonna and Whitney Houston. Rap was starting to take off. I think as we get older we often retreat to the music of our growing up years. One singer that did have a big impact on me was Sarah McLachlan, who now seems to be semi-retired. I miss her!

The 2000's
Baby Boomer Music of the 2000's
Ages 45 to 53
Now that my kids are older, I am influenced by what they listen to and I also make some discoveries on my own. Lately I love listening to Michael Buble, John Legend and Beyonce. I am crazy about Rob Thomas of Matchbox Twenty and am still listening to Santana after all these years. This decade I went to see in concert Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, the Eagles and Bruce Springsteen, all of whom are still rockin' strong.
I'm also a big American Idol fan, a show that has dominated this decade.

Senior Squid Challenge - Baby Boomers
This lens was inspired by a Senior Squids Challenge - to write about baby boomers, those of us born post-World War II (approximately 1945-1965). I was born in 1956. Senior Squids are over 50 so many of us are boomers. When I thought about this challenge, I immediately thought about the music that has shaped me and probably many other boomers.
