Safety of your baby boy's crib

All the pretty crib bedding sets are of no use at all if the basic crib setup is not safe.
Run through this check list first.

  • Crib slats or spindles are spaced no more than 2 and 3/8 inches (60 mm) apart. That is the equivalent of the width of a soda can.

  • Slats or spindles are not missing, cracked, splintered or loose.

  • There are no sharp, pointed, rough or jagged edges.

  • Wooden surfaces are smooth and free from splinters, splits or cracks. No cracked, chipped or peeling paint.

  • There are no missing, loose, broken or improperly installed screws, bolts, brackets or other hardware on the crib or the mattress support.

  • No decorative corner posts or finials that extend more than 1/16 inch (1½ mm) above the end panels, unless they are for a canopy and are over 16 inches high.

  • No cutout designs in the headboard or footboard.

  • Mattress support is securely attached to the end panels and it cannot be easily dislodged from corner posts.

  • A firm, tight fitting mattress. There should be no more than two fingers width between the edge of the mattress and the crib side.

  • Drop-side latches too difficult to be released by a child.
