Baby Mattress Basics

There are many different types of cot mattress available. You can choose between foam mattresses, spring interior, natural fibre mattresses, special anti-allergy mattresses, or a combination of any of the above. You may be concerned to know which is the best and safest mattress to use for your baby. In fact, The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths states that it doesn't matter what kind of mattress you use, as long as it's firm not soft, doesn't sag at all or show any signs of wear and tear. Unless you know the history of a second-hand mattress, buy a new one.

Baby Mattress Sizes

Double check the size of the mattress against the size of your crib. Most cribs and crib mattresses are made in standard sizes these days, so the mattress size shouldn't be an issue. Occasionally you may find that a mattress doesn't fit well with a certain crib, though, so checking the fit is important. The mattress should fit fairly tight inside the crib. There shouldn't be an obvious gap between the crib frame and mattress, and you shouldn't be able to easily push more than one finger down in between the mattress and crib frame.

Waterproof Baby Mattresses

For obvious reasons, having a waterproof crib mattress will save you a lot of aggravation. The No-Compromise Baby Mattress features a non-toxic polyethylene waterproof surface, so pure that it meets food contact standards (independently tested by Intertek)! Polyethylene has a very simple molecular structure that does not require chemical additives, and is an excellent alternative to the vinyl/PVC found in nearly all crib mattresses. Polyethylene is largely considered to be the most non-toxic and environmentally friendly plastic available. It eliminates the toxic chemicals without eliminating convenience. This mattress contains NO pthalates. This has been independently tested and confirmed.

Types Of Baby Mattresses

There are two major types of crib mattresses sold today. One type is a polyurethane foam and the other type is an innerspring mattress. The number one question asked by parents about mattresses is, "Which is better, foam or innerspring?" The truth may sound like a politically correct answer but, it is the correct answer. The answer is, it depends. A good quality foam mattress will be as good for baby and last as long as a good quality innerspring crib mattress. If the choice is between a good quality foam mattress and an average quality innerspring mattress then, the foam is better. The reverse is also true. If the choice is between a better quality innerspring and an average quality foam mattress, choose the innerspring.
