- Have you ever asked yourself, "What in the world does my baby want?"
- Have you ever been frustrated because you couldn't understand what your baby was trying to tell you?
- Have you ever thought, "There MUST be a better way!"?
Well, Mom, you're RIGHT!
Here's the good news
Did you know that infants as young as 7-8 months of age can communicate long before they ever speak their first word? They simply use their hands!
This amazing phenomenon is called Baby Sign Language!

How can Baby Sign Language benefit my baby?
~Can communicate before they speak - Babies can understand language long before their muscles enable them to speak. Research has proven that the gap between understanding and communication can easily be bridged with sign language.
~Speak earlier than non-signers - Contrary to what some have thought, it has been proven conclusively that babies who sign, speak earlier than those who don't.
~Experiences less frustration - When you give a baby a way to express his feelings, there is little or no cause for frustration. Babies soon discover that signing is more productive than crying or whining (which I'm sure relieves some of mom's frustration too).
~Have IQ's that are 10-12 points higher - Reason alone to sign with your baby! Some researchers even claim 20 points!
~Develop larger vocabularies - By age 2, on average, signers have 50 more spoken words than non-signers
~Demonstrate greater interest in books - One of the techniques you'll learn to reinforce signing uses books. Once reading becomes interactive, your baby's interest in books soars!
~Have better imaginations - Simply put, signing helps build more of the brain and greater brain function.
~Possess Greater Self-Esteem - Studies have shown that reaching out and being understood by a grown-up is important for a child. Signing babies grow up thinking well of themselves.
~Experience a closer bond with their parents and siblings - Signing enables babies to tell the family what they're intersted in. That means they can initiate converstaions and feel like an active member in the family instead of just a "family-member-in-waiting."
A Day in the Life of Baby Sign Language
Article by Christy Edwards (copyright 2006 Signing Stars)
As you wake up and are getting dressed and ready for the day, you hear your 14 month old toddler in his room making those familiar early morning "I'm awake" sounds. You peek in his room only to find him lying in bed practicing his signs. You hear his efforts at saying "Mommy" and "Daddy" while he does the signs and you immediately know who he is thinking about. You walk in and say "good morning" with hugs and kisses only to be greeted with the sign for "diaper change".You shower him with more hugs and kisses as you head over to lay him down and change his diaper. You open his diaper and say "Whoo-wee! You sure DID need a diaper change (followed by appropriate sign) didn't you?"
Once the diaper change is over, you get flashed the sign for "eat" so you know your little one is ready for some breakfast. You both sit down for breakfast and halfway through, that thirsty little booger signs to let you know that he needs more milk. Once he polishes off a second helping of milk, it's off to play time.
Your little one has been playing for a while when all of a sudden you hear screams and crying coming from the other room. You rush in to see what is wrong only to find your little one sitting on the floor crying. You look into those precious eyes and ask "What's wrong? What happened?" Unable to verbally express what happened, He replies with the sign for pain over his left knee. You look and sure enough, there is a scrap there that is bleeding. You take him into the bathroom to take care of his "boo boo" with band-aids and kisses. When you finish, your son looks up at you, does the sign for "thank you" and runs off to go play again.
You may think this is a story that was made up and isn't real, but these are things that I, as a signing parent, experience on a daily basis. Other signing families experience these things as well. They have babies that can tell them their needs and desires. They don't have to "guess" why their son or daughter is crying. Their child can tell them, with signs, what it is they want.
Sure, teaching Baby Sign Language takes patience and commitment, but the rewards far outweigh the effort that is involved. No words can express the feeling that you feel when you know that you have given your child a way to communicate with you before they have mastered speech. It's practical, natural, and beautiful and I am so thankful that we were able to use it to communicate with our children. I'd never go back to the old way. Would you?
How'd he do that?
The boy in the picture from the above article is my son, Isaiah. He was eating and wanted more, so he did the "more" sign that you see in the picture. Notice how his mouth is forming the word "MORE?" That is a KEY element of teaching sign language to pre-verbal children. Signing is not a replacement for speech....it is actually a catalyst! Here is the picture from our dictionary that we use to teach the sign for more...give it a try!
Can you teach older children?
Absolutely! Our program covers ages 6 months - 5 years of age!! In fact, here is my daughter at age 5. She doesn't need to use signs anymore because she speaks just fine (in fact, her problem is that she can't STOP talking haha). She just developed a love for Sign Language and is constantly learning new signs. She loves to show off what she's learned! Extra Little Help for Busy Moms

I have heard great things about sign language for babies. It is easier for them to pick up than speaking language. Thanks for the great lens, very informative.
