Smooth as a Baby's Bottom!
It's an age old cliche. But if you are a mother, you know that babies aren't always born with soft and smooth skin. In fact, for the first few weeks of life, a baby's skin will be flaky and dry as it sheds the waxy coating that protects their skin while in the womb and at birth.
This lens is here to teach you how to care for your infants skin so that the beautiful, soft and smooth texture that we all envy can be revealed and nurtured right from the start of life.
We all want what's best for our little angels. These days we are given a lot of options. Sure, we are used to and most comfortable with brands like Gerber and Johnson's and Johnson's who have been around for years. But with a little research you will find that there are some magnificent alternatives. Organic and natural skincare is the perfect choice for keeping your infant's skin healthy.
Baby Skin Conditions
Newborn Rashes
At birth, your baby's skin is extremely delicate. While shedding the protective layer of skin from when baby was within your womb, your little one's skin is also retaining some of your hormones, making him more susceptible to several minor and temporary skin conditions.Infant Acne is the most commonly known skin condition. It is characterized by red bumps often present on the face, hence the label "acne". However, rather than a blemish, this is actually just a simple rash that will appear during the newborn period.
Salmon Patches, also known as Stork Bites found at the back of baby's neck and Angel Kisses found between the eyes are harmless nests of blood vessels that can be seen through the skin. These skin conditions are also known to be caused by maternal hormones. While the majority are temporary, there are some cases where the stork bites do not go away.
Erythema Toxicum is another common rash that can invade your newborns's skin. This rash looks more like mosquito bites or hives. While the cause for this particular rash is unknown, it will clear on it's own within a few days or weeks.
As with Erythema Toxicum, the other above listed newborn skin conditions will resolve on their own within days or sometimes months without the need for treatment. In rare cases, a prescribed cream can be applied to your baby's skin if his baby acne is too severe.
Infant and Toddler Skin Ailments
Cradle Cap is a skin condition of the scalp that many babies will battle while still an infant. The combination of maternal hormones circulating in the baby's system and overactive glands in the scalp are the known causes of these thick, crusty flakes. My son had a bad case of cradle cap which was very difficult for me accept. I thought for sure I was doing something to cause this mess! In fact, there is no way to prevent cradle cap. However, there are some easy methods to treat it such massaging the scalp with oil and using a soft baby brush to remove the scales.
Heat Rash and Eczema are very frequently misconceived to be the same skin condition. However, they are two separate types of rashes with different root causes.
Heat Rash are small pink pimples, usually spread throughout various parts of the body and are the result of high heat, humidity and undeveloped sweat glands. Dressing your child in loose clothing and keeping his skin dry will help to prevent further breakout.
Eczema is red, scaly, highly irritated skin. This skin condition is widespread and genetically determined. Eczematic skin should be treated with specially formulated products. Ingredients such as fragrance and artificial coloring are known to be irritants.
Diaper Rash is the most popular skin condition among infants and toddlers. Most parents feel that a case of diaper rash indicates a lack in their parenting skills, but this is not true. The exact cause for diaper rash is still in active debate in the world of dermatology. Due to the nature of enclosed diapers, a skin infection is easily formed by the overgrowth of bacteria and fungi. Contact irritants also promote an infection due to the skin's possible sensitivity to certain diaper materials and wipes. The best method of preventing diaper rash is to change diapers as often as possible. This will discourage the harvest of bacteria introduced by urine and stool. Also try to dry the skin before putting on your baby's clean diaper. Some experts suggest giving your child's bottom some time to "breathe" by removing his diaper for a short period of time. Perhaps the best time to try this method is during a nap while the baby is sleeping on waterproof sheets.
