What's best for your baby?
When most people think of monitors the first question that comes to mind is what about the interference from those who have the same channel. To prevent being heard or hearing your neighbors be sure to purchase a monitor that has added security features. This "add on" is considered no-interference technology.
If all you want to do is to be able to hear your baby, then the basic monitor is what you are looking for. If you want to be able to watch your baby just for peace of mind or you are watching their breathing and movement patterns, then you will want a video monitor. Just because it is a video monitor you still want to have a good sound quality. You can also have movement sensors added to the monitor. Most parents are likely to fall into a false security mode if the monitor has too many bells and whistles added. After all the best way to check your baby is to personally check on them.
If you have another child that is still young and you want to be able to check on them like you do your newborn, your options are somewhat fewer. There are a few monitors that have multi room capabilities. Another option would be to buy two separate systems to listen to each child. If you go this route you want to be sure that neither system interferes with the other one.

Questions to ask before purchasing a baby monitor
There are many questions that you might have when you consider a monitor to keep tabs on your baby. But perhaps the most ask questions are the ones that you should consider.
How big a unit should I get? That depends on what you will be doing with your unit. Will it stay in one place all the time or will you be taking it with you. Usually the smaller the unit the easier it is to take with you.
What kind of battery does it have? If you have a battery light indicator then you want to know about how many hours will the unit run on the battery. Then test your unit to see if it lives up to the battery life of the unit. This way you will know when you will need to be replacing the battery. Your reason for purchasing the unit is to be able to listen or watch your child. You won't want to miss anything that you should be hearing or seeing.
Perhaps the one most asked question is about the bandwidth. This will depend on where you live. Do you live in the country or close to neighbors. If you have a zero lot line then you will really need to take the bandwidth into consideration. Ask your sales person which bandwidth is right for you in the environment you live in.

- You manage to cover every base here. I used an audio baby monitor but you are so right, they need to be used with caution. Its so important to check in on little ones, especially when they are quiet. The audio/video combo would be wonderful, especially for little ones with at risk issues.
