Laguna Bacalar - an Unspoiled Paradise

WOW - I was absolutely SHOCKED when I searched "BACALAR" on squidoo and produced zero results! Why am I so suprised? Because after nearly 10 years of professionally guiding tours throughout Latin America this is one of the few places I can't get enough of. Words don't do it justice so let's begin with a few pictures:

Where is Laguna Bacalar?

Getting there from:

Mahajual/Costa Maya: Drive inland until you reach the north / south highway (307) that goes to Cancun in the north and Belize in the south. You will turn left (south) and proceed until you see signs entering the town of Bacalar. Total approximate driving time from Costa Maya to Bacalar is 50 minutes.

Cancun: Head south on state highway 307 for approximately 4.5 hours - you will pass Playa del Carmen - Felipe Carillo del Puerto - Limones and finally arrive in Bacalar.

Chetumal: Drive north on highway 307 approximately 40 minutes. You will first spot the Cenote Azul as you enter Bacalar from the south.

Belize City: Take the northern higwhay towards Corozal and the Belize/Mexico border. After crossing the border you will want to continue north avoiding entering Chetumal by taking highway 307 north all the way to Bacalar. Total travel time approximately 3.5 hours.

5 Locations to Visit:

The Fort (built to protect the town from marading Pirates! For real! If you ever want to feel like you are living in Pirates of the Caribbean this is the place)

Cenote Azul (great for lunch and a refreshing swim)

Kohunlich (amazing Maya ruins that rival some of the greatest discovered but a good chance you will be the sole visitor - peaceful setting)

Dzibanche (ruins that rival Kohunlich in size but not as developed. Worth the rough road - stop at the elementary school (morocoy) along the way and play soccer with the kids)

Night Swimming (find a night with thunder and fog and wade in the clear waters - you can almost see the pirate ships attacking!)

Pina Colada Umbrellas or Quaint Mexican Village?

I prefer a non-tourist destination like beautiful bacalar over the vegas style resorts stacked on the drunken beaches of Cancun. Bacalar is what Cancun use to be - unspoiled!

Untouristy Bacalar

Hands down I'd choose Bacalar over Cancun. My idea of a good vacation abroad is a place where I'm the only tourist and I can soak in the local culture, food and sights.

Relaxing in a hammock on the shores of Bacalar instead of fighting through drunken crowds on a sunburned beach? For me it's an easy choice - give me the small mexican town with it's charm, cheap prices, authentic flavors and peace and quiet. The views are still beautiful and if you must have salt in your swimming water the ocean is only 45 minutes away with beaches that destroy cancuns (Majahual).
