Back Exercises for Women, Best Back Exercises

Use these free, online videos of back exercises for women to develop a strong, sleek, and sexy back. Our backs have a big job to do! Our back muscles support our head, neck, trunk and spine. They assist with movement, lifting, and flexibility. All of these things start to suffer as we age but building stronger back muscles can combat the affects of aging making us feel younger, helping us move more easily, and keeping us more fit and healthy in the long run.

A woman's back is also quite artistically beautiful. The long, graceful curves have long been used as inspiration in art and portrayed in paintings and statues for centuries. Not that there's anything wrong with a man's back, mind you. In fact, I saw one just the other day that made me - a responsible, wife and working mother of three boys - take a second look. There's just something more elegant to the muscle definition in the female back.

Back Muscles Names and Locations

Traps, Delts, and Lats

Photo by: The Hidden Collection / CC BY 2.0

You may have heard the terms "traps, delts, and lats" in reference to specific back exercises - like a Delt Row or a Lat Pull Down. These terms are the shortened names for the larger muscles in our backs.

The Trapezius muscle runs across the tops of our shoulders. If you take your arms and put them straight out to the sides with your palms up, cup your hands slightly and bend your elbows to bring your hands in towards your shoulders, your fingers should touch the tops of your Trapezius muscles.

The Deltoid muscles are located right below that and look sort of like a triangle over the back of your shoulder blades.

The Latissimus Dorsi runs is just under your armpit and is actually a rather long muscle that runs down to your lower back.

And who would have thought those darn abdominal oblique muscles had anything to do with our backs? They do, though, because they run along our sides from front to back.

There are many smaller muscles supporting this infrastructure but they are harder to isolate and are generally exercised along with the back exercises that target the larger back muscles.

Mid Back Exercises

Strengthening your middle back

The muscles in our mid back region are easy enough to target with a number of exercises with or without equipment. Any back exercises for women that target the deltoid and latissimus dorsi muscles will help develop that area and provide more overall lifting strength.

MYTH: Working out with weights will make me look like a guy!

TRUTH: Our physiques are very different and you would have to work out like a fiend before you ever developed muscles similar to those of a body builder. I'm 5' 2" tall. I spent a solid year in my mid-thirties working out two hours a day (I tend to go overboard on any new endeavor...). I could easily do three sets of Delt rows at 12 reps with a 60lb dumbbell and I assure you I never looked like a professional body builder or a guy.

Always check with your doctor before performing any new exercise and only do a weight that's comfortable for you. Pushing beyond your limits or performing an exercise incorrectly can cause injury.

Best Lower Back Exercises

Getting to those smaller muscles

We've all seen them, graceful models and famous Hollywood stars on the runway or the red carpet with a back revealing dress that goes so low you can't help but look. Backs so graceful and toned, perfectly underscored by a designer dress in black, or red, or gold. Maybe we can't get our hands on those dresses - nor might we have an occasion to wear them - but we can use these exercises for women to get a nice, toned back.

It can be more difficult to get to the lower back, but the following exercises will help. Just make sure to use the proper form and never put undue pressure on your neck while performing back exercises.

Back Flexibility Exercises

Keeping limber

It's not until you're a bit older and you have that first morning you climb out of bed a bit stiff that you realize how your body starts to give out on you as you age. Okay, it doesn't give out as much as we lose flexibility so we feel like we're just around the corner from needing a walker to get around. Perform exercises regularly to improve flexibility

Lower Back Exercise with Bands

Sunny No. 034-M Toning Tube-Medium
This exercise strengthens the lower back and helps improve your posture. It uses resistance bands to provide additional challenge to the muscle during the exercise. Resistance bands come in many types and styles, although I prefer the ones that have handles like these.

Weight Training Back Exercises

Dumbbells, free weights, and machines

If you belong to a gym or have a set of free weights at home, the following back exercises for women can be performed as part of your total body workout routine. Again, make sure you use the equipment properly and ask a gym instructor for help if you need assistance.

Lateral Rows with Weights

This is my favorite back exercise to do with free weights, however, I couldn't find a good example with a female trainer. This demonstration is one of the best and he's pretty darn easy to look at anyway.
