This spine is one of the most important parts of the human body. It enables an individual to stand, sit or move. In the recent times, back pain has become one of the most common problems across the world. Due to a variety of reasons including age, stress, improper body mechanics, injury or normal wear and tear, many people tend to suffer with persistent back problems. However, only a fraction of these people ever find an appropriate solution for their problems.
Pain in the spinal cord occurs as a result of internal pressure created in the neurons. Currently, problems related to spinal cord can be treated using both nonsurgical and surgical methods. Non surgical methods involve use of anti-inflammatory medicines along with certain alternate treatment methods such as applying ice, gently massage therapy or use of heat. A major proportion of back problems get eliminated in this manner.
Surgical procedures or laser back surgery is considered as a treatment option in a very small percentage of patients. Normally, it is reserved for patients where conservative therapies have failed. Usually, physicians suggest back surgery when there is any injury to the spinal nerve or when the spinal cord is compressed. Surgery is also considered when the movement between the vertebrae is unusual or in situations when the individual loses control over his/her bladder and bowels.
Prevention is always better than cure. The spine is such a sensitive area that it is not always possible to find complete solution for back problems. Hence, one must employ proper precautionary measures in terms of sitting, standing and lying postures so as to prevent the occurrence of spinal cord related problems. Some of these measures are explained below.
- One should always stand tall and erect. In this position ears, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles come in one straight line. The head must always be aligned on top of the spine and the shoulders should be pulled back.
- When it comes to sitting, one should avoid positions such as slouching or drooping shoulders. Also, the pelvis must be present right below the shoulders even while sitting.
- While lying on the bed, the best position is to lie flat on the back. Even in this position, the head must be aligned with the spine in a straight line.
Apart from practicing right postures, one must also incorporate a daily exercise routine that can provide strength and endurance to back muscles. Some examples include abdominal crunches, ankle pumps, quadriceps setting exercises and gluteus setting exercises.
Back surgery is a scary situation. Most would like to avoid it at all costs. However, if you have never before experienced back pain, you have no idea how painful it can be. In many cases, successful laser back surgery can bring many years of pain free living to your life!
