New Students Are Attracted By Colleges Offering Grants For Going Back To School

Colleges and universities are opening their doors to rising, in some instances record, numbers of students. It's back to school at campuses throughout the United States, and many are reporting that enrollment numbers are up. Recession? What recession? Families in this tough economy might be having a hard time pulling together money for online classes and university tuition, but they're nevertheless choosing to make an investment in the future.

Families last year at least reported having to work longer hours and pull more money together from scholarships, grants and other sources to pay for tuition, according to a Fannie Mae report released earlier this year. Some lesser known institutions, as a means of attracting students, have been offering scholarships to every student who enrolled, an August article in US News & World Report's annual "America's Best Colleges and Universities" noted. More recently, many say, enrollment numbers are up as a result of the recession, changing workplace requirements and beefed up and more aggressive marketing campaigns.

One of several upstate New York institutions is where enrollment is up, according to an area publication known as the Democrat and Chronicle. The Democrat and Chronicle also addressed adult students as they relate to college and university enrollments. The rising number of students at one particular college include 2,600 freshmen expected to move into residence halls, according to an announcement from the institution. On Aug. 30, 414 students also are to settle in to a new, $54.5 million "global village," where residences and businesses reflect places throughout the world, the announcement noted.

Not Just Senior Citizens Choosing To Earn Their College Degrees Online

Enrollment at a central Florida college, according to an article on Ocala.com, has this year reached record numbers. On Aug. 27, senior citizens at that college have an opportunity to attend a "recareering seminar." According to an announcement from that college, through the seminar, seniors are expected to receive assistance with everything from scholarships for going back to school to resumes to job development and interviewing skills that might better enable them to change careers.

Changes in marketing campaigns have helped bring in students as well, according to college and university representatives. The Examiner-Enterprise.com, in reporting in part on an Oklahoma university's record new student enrollments, made note of a newly aggressive marketing campaign as well as recruitment efforts. Marketing was actually the focus of a gathering earlier this year.

More International Colleges Encouraged To Offer Distance Learning Programs

Inside Higher Education reported on this gathering of for-profit college and university representatives.
