Back2School Crochet Pen Holder

A crocheted plarn pen holder that could hold up to 7 pens - why have I not thought of that when I was still teaching? As a teacher I need ball pens in all colors and a pencil too. I used to buy cell phone holders that I would clip to my ID for these pens and pencil. Because of Rocketmom's Education Lens Challenge, I was inspired to make this. It can actually hold a cell phone, but because its made of plarn, I'm afraid it would scratch my phone's LCD.

Tools and Materials

Here's what I used to make this pen holder. You can substitute it with what you have.
  • 1Big (Flesh-Colored) Plastic Bag - I made a single-strand plarn* from it which is 1/2-in wide. I "softened" it up by passing it through the narrow hole of my key to make it easy to crochet.
  • 2Orange and Transparent Plarn - A small amount is needed for flower
  • 3Flesh and Gray Sewing Thread - The flesh thread is used as a lock while the gray thread will be used to crochet the stamen of the flower (together with the transparent plarn to give it a silver effect)
  • 4Crochet Hooks - I used two crochet hooks for this project. The 3/0-4/0 double-pointed aluminum crochet hook (I used the 3/0 side) for the plarn and the #7 steel hook for the flesh sewing thread I used as a lock. I used the #7 steel hook to hide ends.

Project Instructions

Body

Foundation Chain: Ch 14.

Round 1: 12 sc starting with the 2nd ch from hook, 3 sc on the last ch, 12 sc on the other side of the chain, sl st to 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

Round 2: (Sc, ch 1, sk 1 st) repeat all around, sl st to 1st sc. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Round 2 until desired height is achieved. Weave in ends.

Tie

Attach the plarn as shown in the picture. That's on the side of the 2nd row from the top.

Make a chain of desired length. Stretch the chain before attaching it with a sl st to the other side.

Weave in ends.

Flower Button

Make a 3D Crochet Flower with Stamens.

Use transparent plarn crocheted with gray sewing thread for the stamen and orange plarn for the petals.

Sew the flower to the pen holder using flesh sewing thread.

 Lock

Gather 6 strands of the flesh sewing thread measuring 1 m. Use this to crochet the lock.

Attach the sewing thread 3 rows from the top.

Ch 40, sl st to where it was attached. Sl st all 40 chains.

Weave in ends.

My daughter interfered in my photo shoot again so I just took her photo having a good time playing with the pen holder.
