Mutiple Sclerosis And Back Pain
Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive [demyelinating disease that affects the motor and sensory neurons. The disease process can go into cycles of remission. But each time the disease comes out of remission the condition seems worse. Each time the disease comes out of remission, the entire disease is reviewed including the cause. The cause is not clear at this time. However, some experts believe that viral infections and autoimmune disease plays a part in the cause of Multiple Sclerosis.
This disease can cause Back Pain. The pathophysiology of this disease is that the demeliniazation will start affecting the brain, as well as the spinal cord. Once it affects these areas degeneration starts targeting the myelin sheath (Nerves that insulates the layers of nerve cells) and causes a string of patches of sclerotic tissues. The patches impair the conduction, which reaches the motor nerve impulses. Frequently this can interfere with the normal spinal nerve conduction and can cause back pain. Which is why unexplainable back pain should be seriously investigated for cause.
An Explanation Of Multiple Sclerosis

Symptoms Of Multiple Sclerosis
How do I know if I have Multiple Sclerosis?
You consider the symptoms. The symptoms include ataxia, blurred vision, weakness, heat intolerance, nystagmus, sensation impairment, speech scan, diplopic, optic neuritis, paresthesia, tremor intentions, euphoria sensations, paralysis, incontinence urine, and powerlessness to feel or measure the pose of the body.
What is ataxia?
Ataxia is the lack or inability to control the muscles coordination or movement.
What is nystagmus?
Nystagmus is involuntary movements of the eyes, which rhythmically move from side to side and is caused from the disease since the nerves and muscles behind the eyeball is affected.
What is diplopic?
Diplopic and/or diplopia are double vision. Double vision is caused from lack of coordination of the eye movement. The optic neuritis also affects the eyes.

A Short But Very Informative Explanation of Multiple Sclerosis
Diagnosing Multiple Sclerosis
If multiple sclerosis is suspected doctors use multiple methods to determine a diagnosis. Such as MRI, CT scan, Central spinal fluid studies, etc. Once the test are completed they look for increases of IgG (immunoglobulin) in the blood and increasing protein and increase in White Blood Cells, if these are found, medical management is now considered.
Also if they spot atrophy on MRI they will start medical management right away. Management varies from patient to patient. Back pain is a common complaint.
According to statistics the large majority of all people on this planet will suffer back pain to some degree. Whether it is from injury, or disease, back pain is extremely common. It can also be in varying degrees of severity. No matter the cause, back pain can be very debilitating and difficult to manage. So do not delay treatment.

What If The Back Pain Is From Multiple Sclerosis
Do Not Delay Diagnosis
When considering back pain one must ask what its cause is. How can one control the pain? What self-care prevention strategies can one use to ease back pain? What treatments are available to me?
The fact is back pain can occur from feet conditions, such as swelling, heel pain, burning soles, battered ligaments, and so on. Sports injuries, obesity, car accidents, inappropriate bending, and lifting are all related to back pain. In fact, various medical conditions cause back pain, including multiple sclerosis, pulmonary edema, and so on.
When multiple sclerosis is present, medical treatment often includes diet, controlled exercise, speech therapy, physical therapy; fluids increased, meds, and so on. Muscle relaxants, such as Baclofen or Lioresal are giving to the patient etc. The doctor will often recommend that the patient take Maalox. Maalox is laced with magnesium and aluminum hydroxide, which is in the muscles and apparently lacking in multiple sclerosis patients. Maalox acts as a natural remedy..
Alterna-GEL is also prescribed, which has the chemicals the muscles produce as well known as aluminum hydroxide gel.
So the message being given here, is that you are probably going to experience back pain in your life, hopefully it won't be too bad for you and certainly hopefully not connected to a disease process such as multiple sclerosis. But if you do develop unexplainable back pain, in other words no injury or trauma that would cause back pain, you must not delay beginning diagnosis and medical management. Good health to you.

- Hi Susan. Very good lens - I can tell because I was diagnosed with Type I-RRMS myself a couple of years ago, so I have done my homework :-) Thankfully, no apparent symptoms, except for a numbness and ataxia that led to the diagnosis, nothing since then. The doctors said I don't even need medication for the time being (there are other doctors, of course, who would issue prescriptions for a calus, but I've learnt not to mind them). If the need arose, I wouldn't opt for the oral drug, as it is not yet adequately tested over a significant span of years and I don't like playing the guinea pig. If I was to craft a lens on MS, I would certainly consider dedicating a few modules to proper eating (very important!) and physical exercise. MS most of the times affects motion, so it is vital that we have trained our muscles to better cope with it. Keep up the good work!
