Back Pain

What causes back pain?

Back PainWell that is a very tough question to answer because back pain can have many causes.
The causes of back pain can be as benign as a strained muscle or it can be as complex as organ disease.
This is where the doctor of chiropractic can be an invaluable resource. Generally chiropractors treat the back every day and are trained in diagnosing the problems that cause pain in the back. Through the use of physical examination, orthopedic and neurological testing as well as imaging techniques the doctor of chiropractic is able to determine the cause of the problem and how best to alleviate the problem.
When it is a problem outside his scope of practice lets say a kidney problem, the doctor of chiropractic will refer the patient to a medical doctor for follow up.
Many times however the back pain patient has been the medical route before they show up at the chiropractor. They have endured all the tests have taken bottles of pills and still have back pain. Why is this? Most back pain is due to a mechanical problem. The spine is made up of 4 main sections the cervical (neck) area, the thoracic (mid back) area, the lumbar (low back) area and sacral area. Each area has several bone which have articulations with the bones above and below well except the sacrum which should be fused by the time you reach adulthood. Now anyone of these articulations could have a problem.
Three of the most common problems that cause back pain are restriction in joint motion, sprain to the articular joint and arthritis of joint.
Most uncomplicated back pain comes from restriction of the joint motion. This is where one or more joints are not moving properly causing pain, restriction in range of motion and often times muscle spasm around the affected joint. Joint motion restriction is sometimes referred to as a subluxation in a chiropractic office. When a joint is not moving correctly the motion needs to be restored. This is where the chiropractor can be invaluable. Where as medical doctors focus on the use medication and surgery to alleviate conditions the chiropractic focus is the detection and elimination of these subluxations.
Strain of the articular joint is common when there is an injury involved prior to the onset of back pain. This type of back pain is also treated well by the doctor of chiropractic. Early on with a strain the emphasis will be on decreasing the inherent inflammation supporting the joint to limit further damage and as time goes on restoring motion to the affected joint or joints.
Arthritic joints are some of the hardest to work on, the damage was done sometime ago and not treated properly and now the body is stabilizing the joint by forming new bone. Mobilization is key at this point. You need to restore as much movement to the joint as possible in order to prevent a worsening of the condition. I prefer to start slow with arthritic joints as to much to soon often leads to irritation of the joint which may cause increased pain.
No matter what the cause of your back pain a doctor of chiropractic can diagnosis it and if it is within their scope of practice relieve it faster and for less money then by taking drugs or getting surgery.
