Great tutorial, simple and easy to follow. I was trying to make the background of an image(oddly enough, a lemon) transparent. It has a simple solid color background which I was able to remove with your tutorial, however Iinstead of making the background a checkered pattern, it just replaced it with white. I don't know how to fix this and I was wondering if you could help. Thanks man, and again great tutorial; even I could follow it!

As you can see, I did get a white background at first. It didn't have the checkered pattern until after I added the alpha channel, then removed it using the steps I used with the image of the banana. So if you've taken your image up to the point where the background is white, add the alpha channel, then follow my steps I used with the banana.

I remember when you started using GIMP....this is a great tutorial, and now I know why I have a checkered background on one of my pictures :)

I really must try this. I installed Gimp several years ago and couldn't get the hang of it, but I do need to learn a decent graphics package (Paint does a bad job and few options) and I could use removing the background from images too. Your tutorials look very clear.

I hope this helps you to get it done. Once you are able to do it, so many possibilities open up. Just make sure you never save any of your edits over the original! ;)

for some reason I use the selection tool that make the moving lines and i try to delete the white background for a transparent background, but when i float the background to a new layer and then try to delete the selected floated layer nothing happens. anyone know why its not deleting the white floated background layer?
  • CleanerLife May 12, 2010 @ 9:34 am | delete
Not sure if this is what you are experiencing, but sometimes something similar to this happens to me. When it does, it turns out that I have the wrong layer selected. You might need to changed the selected layer or reverse the layers.

Good tutorial, really explained a lot. Also, as a suggestion- instead of floating the areas you want to delete and deleting the new layer, you can simply just press the "delete" or "del" key on your keyboard, without creating any new layers, to get rid of the stuff you don't want once selected. :)
