Stopping the Blame: Know about Date Rape

It may not be something you dared imagine but it's true. If a background check was to be conducted on the assault on women through rape, you too would be most definitely shocked with the results.

For years, the word rape would make us think of women being ambushed by some drunkard or drug addict (or any numskull for that matter) and force sexual intercourse with them in some dark alley, where no one would be able to hear or respond immediately to their screams for help. Eventually it doesn't always apply this way. It is surprising to know that 92 percent of rape cases have happened with the suspect being an acquaintance.

Date rape is a coerced way of having sexual intercourse by someone whom the victim knows (excluding a family member). It could be a friend, a friend's friend, or someone recently met at the party. As any rape reports, the most common targets of such hostilities are women from ages 15 to 24. These are the usual stage where girls start dating and going out with friends. However, as women are the most often connected to this sexual assault, men also are no different.

This is surprisingly very common. While some might think there is no such thing as date rape thinking that this is probably some hoax from girls (she said no but in truth she asked for it) to get attention or get even with guys, well it exist. Unfortunately these cases are not very much reported due either because of embarrassment from the ladies who experienced this or because they blamed themselves and thought that its but normal since the one who forced them is someone they know. This should not be the case. Victims should not blame themselves for such a misfortune happening to them. Being quiet with this may only let things go worst as most are blackmailed into doing going through it again. Emotional blackmail is just one of the many ways "dates" use in forcing sexual intercourse.  Other ways are through giving alcohol, drugs, or just simply tricks victims to doing so. There are also those, who do physical abuse. Acquaintances, which do this kind of assault, are mostly in the age range of 17 to 30.

There are some myths that may hinder the report of this case, especially among women. It is because of such beliefs that may also lead the victim to thinking that what happened was just normal or their fault. Background check on these cases has proven that the ordinary guys are the suspects and not some psychopaths out on the loose. They may come from all backgrounds. In addition rape may even happen in one's own home. For the attacker to do such a thing is brought about by today's culture where it seems sex is an expected act after dates.

There is fear and helplessness: Fear for not being believed and helplessness for the shame. Rape victims are amongst those considered as fragile. There is this big psychological impact in them that may take a long time to heal. This may affect their future relationships not just in making friends but also in their family. To take the ease out from these victims, there are services that deal specifically to this kind of problems. It helps them ease out and do what is right—fight back. Prevention, however, is better to ensure date rapes are far from happening. There are sites that offer information on this topic as guidance from parents is considered the best option. It's time to stop ignorance from such cases kill us….
