Backlinks

In short, backlinks are links that point to your site. In a longer detailed explanation, a backlink is a link anywhere on the internet that if clicked on, will take the person to your desired destination (a.k.a your website.)

For example, I have a backlink in the introduction of this lens. My backlink is pointing to my SEO tutorial lens. You can usually tell a link because it's a different color text, or if you hover your mouse over it, the mouse turns into a hand), Here's another backlink Is making money online easy?

Do you notice how the links are relevant text to the site I am pointing at is? Meaning, for the link "making money online", the site I am pointing to is actually about tips for making money online. So it is only natural the text link (a link that is in text as opposed to a URL address) pointing to that site is related to what the page is about.

Another quick tip: don't link to unrelated pages. For example, this lens is about backlinks, and I am pointing to a site that is about making money online. The two ideas are related to each other (because you need backlinks in order to make money online.) That's what a back link is. Understand?

Okay, the reason for having backlinks is very simple, but it so often gets overlooked by webmasters (you and I.)

The reason you need backlinks is so that the search engines can rank your websites. Let me explain a little more. When you type into a search engine "how to make online", a list of websites you can chose from appear for the results. These are known as search engine results. Well, how do you think the search engines determine which sites to show for those searched keywords? (You can read more on this topic by going here.

The more quality backlinks you have pointing to your page or site, the higher the search engines will favor you.

There is another benefit to getting links pointing back to your site...not only do you have a higher rank with the search engines, but there will be people who see your links and WILL click on them...free traffic for you!

(Note: The main goal of getting link backs is not so much that people will visit your site, but so that the engines know about your site and will deliver thousands more visitors to your site then just a few visits from people clicking on your links. This is just an added benefit, but not the main goal of back links.)

1.) Write articles to article directories. Some of the most popular article directories include ezinearticles and goarticles, Here's two very interesting places you can go to write articles and get link backs (plus they do revenue sharing)

P.S Ad revenue sharing means they share a portion of the ad profits. So if you write an article, your article will have ads around it. Not only do you get a backlink to your site, but if someone reads your article, they will most likely either click on the link back to your site (a free visitor!) or they will click on an ad. Well, you get a portion of that profit. Pretty neat stuff. Speaking of ad sharing and backlinking, Squidoo is a perfect place for both. Have you started your own lens yet? The search engines love Squidoo, and you can get a back link and ad sharing.

Another P.S. Writing articles is beneficial because the search engines will see your articles, and chances are they will get ranked before your actual page that is being pointed too...this is okay, because you will get visitors this way. Also remember, people use the articles you write for their websites. If your article gets used on a website, this is an excellent type of backlink.

2.) Post in forums for about 10 minutes a day. If you post in a forum, create a signature with a link to your website. The more posts you make, the more backlinks you will have. (Just make sure you are following the forum rules about posts and signatures.)

3.) Link exchanges. You can contact websites that are related to your niche and see if they want to exchange- you put a link your site to them, if they link to you.

4.) Submit your posts (if you have a blog) to RSS feeds. (Just do a google search on RSS submission- you'll find a ton of submission sites.)

5.) Bookmark your site! (Again, do an internet search on bookmarking sites.)

6.) Answer questions in the question sites (I.E. Yahoo questions- the search engines love these!)

7.) Post on other peoples blogs with your link. (PLEASE make sure it's a comment that is contributing to the post- there is nothing more maddening than opening my blog admin page to moderate my comments, and I have blatent spam on it.)

One important thing to remember about gaining your backlinks. No matter which way you do it (and you really should be doing them all), make sure you are doing it naturally, and fair. What I mean about this, is you don't want to be viewed as a spammer to anyone, so keep your links natural looking (meaning use text that is ACTUALLY relevant, and make sure you don't always use the same text links) and also don't spam other peoples blogs or sites just to get back links. It's not professional.
