Back to the Future - Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly

Why do I love Back to the Future? Let me count the ways! 1. Michael J Fox 2. Time Machine 3. Doc 4. Classics like Coke and Pepsi 5. Time flaws like Lone Pine Mall

Who is Marty McFly? Your typical american teenager of the eighties. He is helping Doc Brown get video documentation of his new time machine, a DeLorean car. He discovers that the Doc is using plutonium for power and the terrorists he got it from want revenge. Marty is accidentally sent back thirty years to 1955 in the DeLorean "time machine" that Doc invented. Who is Doc Brown? A slightly mad scientist. Now, Marty must find the Doc in 1955 and convince him that he is from the future. He needs Doc to send him back to 1985. Where it gets interesting is when he accidentally meets his own parents in high school. He weirdly, unintentionally attracts his mother's romantic interest. Marty has to repair the accidental detriment before time and circumstances change forever, and destroys his own existence. To do this he must make sure his teenage parents-to-be meet and fall in love.

Deciding Who Will Be "Marty McFly"

Michael J. Fox was committed to the show Family Ties. Although he was the producers first choice to play Marty McFly, things didn't work out. As the film was scheduled to begin May 1985, it was late 1984 when they learned Mr. Fox wouldn't be able to star in the movie. Zemeckis', the producer, next two choices were C. Thomas Howell and Eric Stoltz. They were impressed with Stoltz with his acting of Roy L. Dennis in Mask, not yet released.

Four weeks into filming, Zemeckis decided Stoltz was miscast as being dramatic and too humorless. They felt Mr. Fox had a personality like Marty McFly, where Stoltz was simply acting out the role. He was uncomfortable riding a skateboard, whereas Fox was not. Also the Welinder and Tony Hawk assisted on the skateboarding scenes.

Fox's schedule was opened up in January 1985. The Back to the Future crew met with Goldberg again, where he made a deal that Fox's main priority would still be the tv show Family Ties.

Timeline of Back to the Future I, II and III

1. The original, unaltered timeline that exists at the start of Part I.

2. Marty accidentally jumps back to 1955, and subsequently alters his parent's past. Marty returns to 1985, and the movie ends in this timeline. Doc also travels to the future off-screen. This is presumably also the timeline in which Doc, in the future, sees the trouble with Marty's kids.

3. Doc returns to 1985 to pick up Marty and Jennifer at the end of Part I (replayed at the start of Part II). He brings them to the 2015 where they see their family.

4. "Old" Biff heads back to 1955 in the stolen DeLorean with the sports almanac to give to his younger self. He then returns to 2015, having set his past self up to be rich and powerful.

5. Marty, Doc and Jennifer return to 1985 (dubbed "1985A") in which Biff controls much of the city. They unwittingly leave Jennifer asleep on her porch. The Doc native to this timeline has been committed, and the Marty of this timeline is overseas at school.

6. Marty and Doc travel to 1955 to prevent the changes. Marty robs Biff of the almanac, while avoiding running into the past version of himself.

7. The hover-converted DeLorean is struck by lightning and is sent back to 1885. Doc hides the DeLorean and writes Marty a letter which is delivered in 1955. Marty seeks out the Doc of 1955 who helps him recover the car.

8. Marty travels to 1885 in Part III, where he saves Doc's life, but must return to 1985 alone. Doc, in the past builds a locomotive into a time machine and travels into the future to have it hoverconverted. He may also have stopped in 1985 to retrieve Einstein.

9. Doc and his family return to 1985 in the locomotive to give Marty his gift. This timeline may begin earlier if Doc's trip to the future was not immediately prior to his arrival in 1985 at the end of Part III

Goofs

- When Marty is "hitching a ride" on the back of a jeep, he passes the aerobic center (formerly Lou's Diner) three times. Each time is a different angle.

- When Marty and Jennifer arrive late at school, you can see through the windows at the end of the hall that it's dark outside.

- In 1955 when Marty is playing the JVC video camera for Doc Brown, one of the wires falls off but the picture keeps playing.

- Near the end of the movie, Marty positions the DeLorean and realizes he can go back earlier and warn Doc. However, Marty seems to press the buttons 458708 which have no correlation to 10/26/85 0124am.

- At the dance, the picture under the strings at the head of Marty's guitar disappears in long shots.

- At the end of the film when Doc drives into Marty's driveway and knocks over the trash can, the driver (an obvious stuntman) is not wearing the futuristic sunglasses that Doc removes in the next shot.

- In the coffee shop in 1955, when Marty and George are first seen sitting next to each other, we see Biff's black car outside, parked in the sunshine. When Biff enters the coffee shop, the car in the background is in the shade.

- The "Libyan" driver is actually wearing a Saudi headdress.

- At the beginning of film when Marty realizes he is late for school and rushes out of Doc Browns place, he closes the gate and places his skateboard at his right foot. The long shot then shows him skating away on the left foot.
