- Evergreen - The Great GPS Scavenger Hunt
- Description
This lesson requires students to learn to use a GPS receiver as they learn about physical geography. Students will use GPS receivers to survey an open area (natural or disturbed ecosystems) and investigate the different species of plant populations, rock and land formations, and soil types either in the school grounds or in recreational areas in the local community. Students will examine the geologic and geomorphic formations and describe how water and wind erosion have shaped the landscape and helped further plant and animal succession.
Curriculum Framework
This lesson is linked directly to the learning expectations described in the Ontario Curriculum for Grade 9 Geography of Canada (CGC 1D). The learning expectations are also broadly applicable to other Canadian curricula. - School Gardens
- In some schools, gardens are being integrated into the educational curriculum to teach children not only about plants, nature, and the outdoors, but other subjects as well. Gardens can teach children about history, economics, poetry, and math, but are still primarily used for science studies.

food and trasnportation
I use the word fresh with some hesitation. I am almost tempted to put quote marks around the word but manage to resist. How fresh is food that has been transported a thousand miles or more, even if the truck is refridgerated. How long has the food sat on a loading dock, in a warehouse or food terminal, before being shipped to its end destination.
Are transport trucks really the best means of transporting food across the country? Is transporting food across country the best approach to food delivery? The use of fossil fuels contribute to climate change, for example, global warming, not to mention smog within urban centres. We may want to ask ourselves why we have become so dependent upon a system that leaves us vulnerable.
The growing local food movement is addressing these questions. We need to relocalize our food supply .
