How to backup your lens

Recently, I came across a few posting on SquidU about people accidentally deleting their lens or due to some bug. To avoid future headache, once you have created your lens and are happy with the content, I recommend you take a few extra minutes to back it up on your computer hard drive. One you have this, you will be able to recover any mishap.

Here are the procedure to backup your lens

  1. Edit your lens and click on the
"export the lens" on the bottom of the right side screen.
This will save the XML file that describe your lens. I recommend creating a folder such as \Squidoo_backup\
    and place the file there.
  2. Next, go to view your lens and from your browser, click on File on the menu bar. Next click on Save Page As... and make sure you choose the option to save Web Page Complete.
Specify the same folder as before. This will save a HTML file of your lens and create a sub-folder containing all the objects on your lens (such as images and video and audio...)
  3. That's all there is to it. You have just created a full backup of your lens. From these files you will be able to recreate your lens in case you accidentally delete it.

in reply to JaguarJulie The XML file is a standard that captures the information that was created when you build a lens. The HTML is the web page coding. When you back up these files, you are preserving the content of your lens. If in the future, if Squidoo goes away, you should be able to recreate your lens using the XML, the various objects (such as images) and not loose your hard work. I hope this helps.

Hi Jack -- can you give us tips about what to do with the XML file? Why to do that file format export and then the html. Thanks!

Thank you so much for the tip!

Everyone should back up their pages so that, God forbid, something should happen to Squidoo, they could recreate their lenses in some other format somewhere else.

I believe in Godin and I think he's running a tight ship here but in this unpredictable world there are things beyond any of our control.
