A Collection of Backyard Farming Blogs & Other Information

I love reading about backyard farming. I am doing a bit of it myself, with aspirations of doing more. I have chickens, a vegetable garden and a couple of rain barrels. I enjoy reading about what others are doing and how they are doing it. It makes me very excited to see someone else doing something I think I can add to my own backyard farm.

A fair number of urban and suburban backyard farmers are writing blogs about their experiences. I wanted to organize all of those interesting blogs into one place so I could easily find them again. Perhaps this will also be helpful to others who enjoy reading about how others are managing their backyard farms.

Backyard Farming Blogs

These are some backyard farming blogs I enjoy reading.
Firesign Farm
I found this blog because I was looking for information about keeping chickens in winter. This blog had an interesting post about that, and after reading it I got caught up in reading the rest of the blog. I enjoyed it so much I wanted to be certain I could find it again, and this lens was born!
Backyard Farming the Natural Way
Interesting blog written by an engineer who is now retired and finding methods to operate his backyard farm using sustainable methods. Lots of great ideas here!
Sustainable Berea
Berea, Kentucky is a college town in the Appalachian foothills with an initiative to make households more resiliant and sustainable.

Farming Blogs

I have fallen in love with a few bloggers that are not in urban or suburban settings, but are operating from a similar mindset as mine. Here are some rural homesteaders I enjoy reading!
Dawn on the Farm
I met this blogger on the Backyard Chickens forum. She has a facebook page that is interesting also.

More Information About Backyard Farming

Here are a few more websites that I enjoy reading to get ideas or solutions for my backyard farm.
Mother Earth News
I have been reading this magazine since the 1970's. The print magazine is great for anyone interested in homesteading. The website is terrific too!
Urban Farming
The Urban Farming mission is to create an abundance of food for people in need by planting, supporting and encouraging the establishment of gardens on unused land and space while increasing diversity, raising awareness for health and wellness, inspiring and educating youth, adults and seniors to create an economically sustainable system to uplift communities around the globe.
Urban Farm Online | Sustainable City Living
My sister got me a subscription to this print magazine last year and I have loved it. The website is also chock full of good information. Worth checking out!

Urban Farm in My City

I am so inspired by seeing what other people are doing in their backyard farms! This is a video of a guy in my city, Louisville, Kentucky. He lives in a very high density area of the city, and it is amazing to see how much he is able to grow in a very small space. The video is almost 20 minutes long, but if you are like me and find this kind of thing exciting then it is well worth the time to watch. I have watched this several times.

The first part, while they are in the kitchen is a bit slow in parts, but once they go back outside it moves fast and will definitely hold your interest. I hope you enjoy as much as I have!

Rain Barrels for Your Backyard Farm

I use my rain barrels just about every day. I have two of them. One is next to the chicken house and near the garden. I use this one daily.

The other rain barrel is on the far side of my backyard. It is my backup barrel, in case the first one goes dry (which it never has). I have used it for watering plants and washing my dog. It does not get daily use, but it is nice to know it is there for emergencies.

A Worm Composter for Your Backyard Farm

I love the idea of worm composting. You can do it in a small space, even under your kitchen sink. You feed the worms your kitchen scraps and they turn them into fertile castings for your garden.

Worm Factory 360 WF360G Worm Composter - Green

The Worm Factory 360 has a standard 4-Tray size which is expandable up to 8 trays, giving it the largest volume of any home composter. The redesigned lid converts to a handy stand for trays while harvesting the compost. An instructional DVD with step-by-step guide for managing your Worm Factory 360 is included. The accessory kit provides basic tools to make managing the Worm Factory 360 easier. Built in "worm tea" collector tray and spigot for easy draining.

A Greenhouse for Your Backyard Farm

A greenhouse is next on my wish list for my backyard farm. I want a place to start plants, and I want to try my hand at some winter gardening. I eat a lot of greens, and a greenhouse would be perfect for growing some fresh greens through the cold months. I cannot afford a permanent greenhouse right now, but one of these may be just what I need! Plus, they are very affordable! I like that!

Spring Gardener Gable Greenhouse, 6 Feet X 8 Feet X 7 Feet

This is an AWESOME lens! I will be returning several times to get links to those blogs! I, too, want to have a backyard farm someday! (Well, again. I used to have my own home and had a garden, chickens, bees... then I moved and now live in an apt, but I'm already looking for my next home and the number one detail? BIG YARD)

I have a massive garden back home in New Hampshire, but right now we're living in Brazil (which I'm starting to write about here on Squidoo). I have a feeling it's going to be in pretty bad shape when we get back, but I've been establishing the square-foot method and it's pretty great. Thanks for this great collection, and I hope to have one listed here one day!

I have a nice backyard organic garden and now I compost nearly everything for fertilizer, great lens!

I have 3 tomato plants going right now. Guess that doesn't quite qualify as a backyard farm. Wait, I have basil and cilantro too. No chickens or goats though.
