Location, Location!
When planning for your shed, first you want to consider where it will be situated. Don't forget to check your local town by-laws in regards to placement and sizes of sheds allowed in your neighborhood. There is nothing worse than having to move a shed! Next when thinking about the amount of storage space you require, I would highly recommend building a shed bigger than your current needs. This way you have ample room to expand in the future. As your children grow they will have bikes and toys to store somewhere. When you have decided where in your yard to locate your shed, double check that there are no underground cables, wires or sewage drains nearby that could cause future issues. Other Considerations
When building your shed you want to make sure you have a level surface for your shed. Having a good foundation is very important. There are several ideas here. You can clear and level the building area and put gravel down to act as a floor. A concrete slab is a great lasting foundation and a good choice. Lastly you can use a wood floor, if you use this method and live in a cold climate, make sure to add frost protection underneath to prevent any warping during the winter months.
In terms of lumber, the better quality you use the longer your shed will last. If you want to build 'green' go with recycled wood. Insulation may be required, again if you live in a colder climate and possibly wish to use the shed as a work shop or hobby area during the winter. Being close enough to run an extension cord to provide a light and heat is another possibility.

Designs & Plans
Depending upon the amount of building experience you have you may want to purchase design plans. These can be a tremendous lifesaver, saving endless frustrations. A good set of plans should come with a listing of all the tools and materials required for your shed. The plans should be in an easy to follow style with ample graphic designs allowing you to follow along easily. Excellent plans are targeted towards the new woodworking do it yourself er. Lastly your plans should come with various styles and options for your shed. You might require the help of family or friends to build your shed and remember to build safely, wear goggles and watch out for each other. There is no rush, if it takes 3 or 4 weekends to complete it doesn't matter. Once finished you will feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride.
